Again, people who think Shattenkirk is the magic pill that will fix the Rangers 1RHD problem are going to be the same ones who are complaining that he isn't a "true #1" by December.

He's a good player, but hes not 7 mill a year good.

jimmy howard Det g --- 5,291,667 x 2
vs
Staal 5.75 per, mo yrs

what combo of pix/prospects makes that work?

WAY want JH over Pavelec

not sure, but both sides w/NMCs should waive
Ho to get out from under Mrazek
Marc MAYBE cause close enough to [growing up] home

thoughts, thoughts...

- Negotiations with players on a 1-year deal can only start January 1st
- Handshake deals are not allowed and can be penalized heavily

Besides, with just a little synchronicity, Nieves could probably play 1st pair right D. And Staal can shift up to 4th line left winger, freeing up assets to go all in on Hertl.

This....I know it's easy to fall into the trap of "X UFA is the answer", but think about past times where this thinking has lead to only trouble for the Rangers and other teams. Just because hes the best UFA doesn't mean he is a surefire #1 or the "answer".

99.9% chance JT won't hit FA. He may not sign with the Isles, but they'll trade him before he has a chance to walk.

Even when Nash comes off the books, other guys will need raises. People keep assuming that the ELC and 2nd contract guys aren't going to get raises. They are, some of them will be very significant.

I'm glad that they're being very prudent with Shattenkirk. If you can get him on your terms, great. If not, he can enjoy being a part of the next perpetual rebuild in NJ.

Agreed and JT
Regarding your RFA worries:
Nash frees up 8 million in cap. Holden comes off the books with another 2 million, and Klein (unless officially retired now) hands you another 3 million. 13 million total.
Now,
Hayes and Miller will likely get the CK deal: salary boosted up to around 5M.
Both are currently making just above 2.5, so that's -5.

Down to 8 million.
Skjei and Vesey are next up. You think that those two, coming off ELCs, will get more than that?
The two live together, if you think one wouldn't take a slight pay cut to fit the other you're crazy.
If the cap goes up its a non issue.

I don't think people realize just good offensively Mcdonagh could become playing with Shattenkirk and/or vice versa.

Look at the points Shattenkirk has put up playing with freakin Joe Edmundsson and last year Brooks Orpik in his career.

Keep in mind, what happens today doesn't mean the offseason is over. There's contingent plans for everything, so if we don't get Shattenkirk or whomever else we're targeting today, we can see some trades in the near future.

I think a top 4 of Mcdonagh Shatty Skjei and Smith makes the Rangers quite formidable. I don't want to break the bank but if Shatty agrees to the Rangers terms I think the Rangers could be quite good.

Yes, but you have to think if that was possible they would have moved a F other than Stepan for another RHD already no?...

lol where is the fun in not overreacting to the end of the world over everything?

Today is the day to gain assets without giving up assets those gu. Trades for good players require good players being shipped out. We need to be bringing in more talent than we are losing.

Also, Clendening to Arizona. Remember when so many people said he was done in the NHL? Good job. Good effort.

That's assuming that we even could or get who we wanted if we did.

shattenkirk isnt a 1st pair rd. he just isnt. his defense is weak and his 5v5 play is average.

having said that, my gut tells me he's coming here to make the pp legit and add some skating and passing to this defense.

nj is a dead end street. going no where. he wants to win.

tampa he already said no once.

its the nyr folks we win the shatty lottery. :shakehead

now its just a matter of is it 5 or 6 years at 6.5-7 mil compliance buyout is the get outa jail free card.

my guess 6 yr deal at 6 mil 36 total.

You mean when he had .74 PPG and 2.16 P/60 on Washingtons third pair with arguably the worst defenseman in the metro? Yeah. Sign him.

I think Shattenkirk would be amazing for the Rangers, but I understand not wanting to give him almost 50M. honestly I do.. I think he's a great fit..

I honestly just want someone for Mcdonagh, because he's been playing with pure **** for the last 4 years, we've wasted him almost as much as we've wasted Henrik.
