I always think that Stempniak played for us. Probably mixing him with Ponikarovsky.

I like it.

This team disappoints @FA every year. I get what y'all mean about not over extending the budget on a bad contract...understood, but THIS year we really needed that ONE top player to replace Estaal who could maybe put us in playoff mix/sniff at least, and once again... silence. I had hope this year, with JR gone and RF at the wheel, and seeing our obvious need to get THAT player that could propel this team and get fresh arses in the PNC. I'm a little sad at what possibilities are left to us now. :(

You were expecting way too much then.

I am curious how Jordan is going to react. He was probably even willing to take less than what MIN gave him to sign here.

Or he tried to get more money from Carolina, they said no, and he was forced to take less than he wanted on another team.

I don't think so. I remember RF saying that they had agreed on price, but Staal wanted a term he couldn't agree on. I think he probably wound up with less on both ends, after the travesty that was that NYR stint. :amazed:

I have to imagine that when Jordan and Francis talked, and Jordan was said to be okay, that they went over the feeling on Eric and moving on. What he wanted, and what he was offered. All of that. He's probably going to be fine.

The more I think about it, the more I'm actually really happy with what Francis is doing here.

Stempniak and Stalberg were "moneyball" signings. Guys whose nerd-stats look better than their contract size. We didn't bite on guys like Okposo and Ladd, whose contracts will soon make them hated in their new homes.

Our defense is built to last for the next decade, and is about as cost-efficient as humanly possible.

We're uncommitted in net, where a guy like Ben Bishop can suddenly become a possibility out of nowhere as happened today.

We're spending hardly a dollar more than we absolutely need to. If our prior internal budgets are any indication, we have $5-6 million of "war chest" funds to leverage when the time comes.

Francis has done all of this through drafting, taking advantage of other teams' cap crunches, and discipline around UFA signings. There are no horrible contracts on our books, no new holes about to emerge in our lineup. Going forward, we project to improve at literally every position.

For a team which hasn't hit the draft powerball, we're in an incredibly good position. Today was another small but important step in the right direction.

Agree. Now that is an upside pickup at a bargain price. Glad he didn't end up back in NJ.

Stempniak is what he is. We should expect about a 44 point player who dishes as much as he scores. This is a good solid pick up and the type that I would have expected. All comments about being exposable as well as an option at the deadline are true. With this and the Stalberg acquisition, I think we're done on the free agent side of things for now. I still look for a trade. We have to find that exposable D-man.

Val re-sign in Tampa at 3.5m per.

They have to be over the cap

Somebody's gonna bend the Bolts over, might as well be us....but gotta say Stevie's doing a pretty nice job right now.

both Hedman and Vasilevsky's contracts don't kick in until next year, and they bought out Carle

they're fine for now

But as a team they can't really look at it like that. They are basically telling the league who is important to them going forward. They will use up nearly all of their remaining cap space signing their 4 RFAs (if the sign all 4). Then next year they have very little wiggle room to sign Johnson, Palat, Drouin, and Sustr. Somebody's getting moved and my guess is this year as they still have a bit of flexibility. If not, next year puts them in a Chicago-esque situation which removes significant amounts of their leverage.

The more I think about it, the more I'm actually really happy with what Francis is doing here.

Agree 100% with this. Also, that "war chest" allows for trades where we're sending lower salaries for higher salaries (and assuming higher performance) in return.

Today was another small but important step in the right direction.

Is it? They had all those picks, cap space, guys on amazing contracts, roster spots, etc..

And they added TT, Stempniak, Cam Ward, and some grinders.

Seemed like they were in a position to try to transition into a winner, and decided to punt until next year.
