I believe this, because Bergevin could have gone up to $10,148,302 AAV without going into the four 1st round pick compensation tier, and they had plenty of cap room to do it. There was no reason not to, if he really wanted to sign him.

I agree with the concept but I also 100% believe that Bergevin didn't want to go up to the two 1sts range so what Aho signed was his max offer.

Dammit. I didn't even notice the AAV was only about 800 dollars short of the 1-1-2-3 threshold.

Didn't even think about the 1-1-2-3 thing. That makes it even dumber. The four 1sts is one issue, but two firsts, a second and a third? They have a decent prospect group, they could have afforded to give up those picks.
