Speculation: Free Agent Frenzy Part III - Will EK stay or will EK go?

When the traded for McD he wasn't projected to be the player he became. He came through the system.
Actually, McD's inclusion in that trade caused quite an uproar among Habs fans. The deal for Gomez itself was bad enough -- but Gainey lost all credibility when he added McD.

McDonagh has done himself any favors with the way hes played the last 2 years.

Not terrible, but not outstanding either.

I think that we as a fan base expected more because he was the best of a bad lot.

But there a sea of GMs that see who he is and how hes played and what he would expect on a new deal and as much as EK65 is guiding g gia own destination, I bet there were quite a few GMs unwilling to even make an offer for Ryan.

It's a combination of things. Agree on your assessment of his recent play. He's been good, but nothing too special. Some just remember him from the pre-injuries period when he was a much better player. Others believed that he was still a top defender whom was held back by the sub-par play of his partners.

Plus, I think people expected a better package because of what Edmonton gave up for Larsson and for what Calgary gave up for Hamonic. The market was thought to be set really high by two really bad trades.

I think Gorton got the best that he could. More than what Toronto or Boston was offering anyway.

Karlsson was married before, to a Swede. Despite having been together for years prior, the marriage lasted a year. Certainly don't want to judge, but that's fairly unusual. (Not as unusual as the cyber bullying story from last month)... but still unusual.

Each hour that passes without an (official) Karlsson trade, the more bizarre the entire Karlsson situation becomes. Given that this player is the second most gifted hockey player in the game, I'm highly curious as to why he's not the most desired trade target since Lindros.

Is there an understanding behind the scenes that he's a more risky proposition than most will stomach?

Or, perhaps he will only sign an extension with one particular team.

This is the most garbage post I have read in a long time.

You're overthinking this thing big time.

There's not one GM in the NHL that wouldn't like to have Karlsson on his roster.

It’s coming from the same place as “I don’t like the pick because I had another prospect on my list there and how dare Gorton & Co disagree with MY genius”.

its coming from the same place but its worse. when arguing what draft pick you would have made instead we at least know what players were available

Nah, it's gotta be the stupid, complex, behind-the-scenes answer. It's obviously not that he has a NTC, is an UFA after this season, and is willing to only extend long-term for a few teams. Definitely can't be that.

Youd be shocked how many marriages end before the first anniversary nowadays. I know of 2 college friends who was divorced before their first anniversary and they were dating for years prior to getting married.

Divorces, highly unusual and suspicious.

The poster in question must have lived a very sheltered life.

You're going overboard, relax. I'm volleying an unlikely scenario, one which I don't believe. Nothing to get your thong wedged so far.

As for the cyberbullying, it is one of the stranger 'sports stories' I've heard in a while.

Never accuse anyone of going over board ever again.

Speculate and discuss all you want, we all do, but your post was bad all around. Bringing up his divorce and try to paint it as something nefarious and unusual is just bad form.

And btw, 2/3 of a 25 year old single malt in combination with mother earths finest herbs while waiting for the Marbella sunrise has me very relaxed.

So the Rangers are the only team unable to draft a high end talent because they are unlucky???

Holy Batman homer excuses
This team has drafted talent. I can list names but it does nothing for your narrative. The biggest problem has been Sather trading number ones and seconds to go for the cup?
When you are left with crumbs you can't bake a cake.

Maloney is notorious for the Jessiman pick, but 04 was really a wasteland for us. Montoya at 6, then again neither Olesz nor Tukonen (both vouched for by top NYR scouts) had careers either. Korpikoski at 19, we almost went Zajac. Is that a game changer? Probably not, but it’s a puzzle piece missing.

Interesting to note, we sexted with a slew of 2nd rounders, either by draft or later via trade: Chris Bourque, Darin Olver, Roman Voloshenko (RIP), Bruce Graham, Dane Byers, Enver Lisin; all prior to Dubinsky at 60. Its a Murders Row of hot garbage, and although Dubinsky had a legitimate NHL career, he didn’t ‘move the needle’ - he was mostly a tough 3rd line kid that capped out at 40 points - not that there’s anything wrong with that.
You're making it out like only the Rangers screw up the draft. Every team messes up. After the first few picks it's a roll of the dice.

Talent yes. But not elite high end talents.

And that is what held this franchise back from winning a Cup.

Don’t think you in your infinite wisdom overvalue McD? Many had done it prior to the trade even though we’ve seen indications with poor decision making and execution that would be very questionable of 1D. Most of us were able to adjust our expectations closer to market. Did McD played so well for TBL to question market? Not really - he played like a good 2nd pair guy. And look at all offseason signings and extensions. And look at McD extension. Well under $8m that seems to be the market for a franchise 1D.

Now to the trade: let’s say hypothetically Gorton asked for Sergachev or Point and was refused by Yzerman. What does he do now? He can 1) not trade, 2)trade with another team for a package he think has the best return or 3) continue to negotiate until he gets something that is the best return same as in 2) but with TBL. What other genius move or negotiation tactic Gorton missed?

It's poker. Gorton flinched first. If Yzerman said no and they lose in Round 2 or 3, he might be more desperate at the draft.

It's a matter of opinion. Trading a star should bring a star or potential star back.

I'm glad McDonagh's gone. He was brutal and declined fast. Just wish they got one elite stud rather a bunch of good to very good prospects. It wasn't bad trade. Just wish it brought back something real exciting.
