Joe Smith wrote about the Lightning's situation yesterday

Yzerman is going to push hard to win right now.

“A lot of people think (Tampa’s) window is coming up in the next couple years, but they’re not really an old team,” a Western Conference executive told The Athletic. “I think they’d have to mortgage their future for Karlsson. The problem when you get a good team is you’ll lose players because of the cap and you’ve got to have replacements. Tampa has some really good prospects playing in junior and playing in the minors, but they’re going to need some of them.

“It’s going to be really costly to get Karlsson. (The Lightning) is going to have to pay a hell of a price.”

The Lightning has future contracts to consider, too. All-Star Nikita Kucherov is due a hefty raise next summer as a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, you’re looking at somewhere in the $9-$10 million range. All-Star center Brayden Point will need an extension next summer as an RFA, with goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy due a new deal in two years.

With Steven Stamkos making $8.5 million, Hedman making $7.85 million, Kucherov getting close to double digits, could Tampa Bay afford $10 million or more for Karlsson? Tampa Bay has Coburn ($3.7 million) and Anton Stralman ($4.5 million) off the books next summer, and Ryan Callahan ($5.8 million) could get bought out or moved next offseason.

The Rangers take the $5.8M off TB's hands

“It’s going to cost a future first-round pick,” the Eastern Conference executive said of a Karlsson deal. “Maybe if you went to Ottawa and said, ‘I’ll give you a first, second or third for the rights to Karlsson, Ottawa might do it. Load up on draft picks for the future.

“While that would still be a good deal for Tampa, getting a hell of a player and giving them a chance to go after the Cup – and I would do it if I was them – the loss of those picks over multiple years will bite you in the ass. That’s how the system works.

“Getting Karlsson isn’t impossible. It’s just complicated.”

Lightning still seeking Erik Karlsson, but getting a deal...

Karlsson wants to play in TB. No state income tax.

Your looking at one con against a player that has a lot of pros for a young rebuilding team.

You're missing my point completely.

I already said that keep a letter off of his sweater and I'm fine. I was responding to the guy who thinks hes a perfect example of the way to play when in fact, he's the perfect example of the way NOT to play.

You can still play like you give a shit with out trying to throw your body in front of a clapper from the other side of the redline.

Sure, but I'm not excited based on the last trade with Tampa.

El Jeffe had to make an on the spot dice spin with the 3:00 deadline looming. Not sure why, but obviously McDonagh was a must trade at the deadline. This time, I don't think Jeff will be forced into anything.

Don't worry, I found him:

Mitchell Stephens at eliteprospects.com

A strong offensive player who has the perfect amount of resiliency, character, and attitude to play in key roles and not back down. Nimble skater with a threatening top speed. Physically willing to pursue the puck in the hard areas of the ice. Smart and crafty defensively. Very good hands and puck skills. Quick, accurate release on his shot that can fool a lot of goalies. All-in-all, an offensive, upwardly mobile presence that the opposition can't let out of their sight. (Curtis Joe, EP 2014)

Oy. I think I've trolled too hard that people think I'm being serious now. It's like when you're too sarcastic in real life and then people forget and start taking the shit you say seriously and you get in trouble.

I need to re-evaluate my life.

Here's the ideal scenario....

Karlsson goes to Tampa without an extension.

To TB:
Karlsson

To NYR:
Callahan
2019 1st Top 10 protected (condition from McDonagh deal removed)
Tampa 2019 2nd rounder

To OTT:
Cal Foote
2020 1st
Boris Katchuk or similar forward prospect

Tampa wins the Cup. Karlsson doesn't extend. Karlsson signs with Rangers July 1st, 2019.

The trade where we got 2 near NHL ready players and 2 additional picks for a declining defenseman who you repeatedly railed on both while he played here and during the end of his playoff run in Tampa and a malcontent?
You're still missing the point.

I would like a lot more back in the trade. We don't need to do this at all.

I like how this ends though.
