If Karlsson was locked up for 5 years and was coming by himself; the package would start with Skjei and Hayes.

He's an impending UFA.
Bobby Ryan will be attached.
He controls his destiny. He can decline any extension talks and just wait a year for UFA status. He cannot be forced
Ottawa is broke.

He will be traded for pennies on the dollar.
The problem is that you are not competing with Ottawa in this trade, but with others suitors. Somebody will overpay for him.

I have a feeling if we get Karlsson, the return to Ottawa will be an absolute JOKE.

But there in lies the art of the deal. Gorton’s job is to facilitate making a bad situation manageable and even something they can sell to their fans. He’ll give them some roster players to use and some prospects and a pick or two to fill out the quantity ledger. This is not when you act like your taking the guy to the cleaners but your helping them out

No one really wanted karlsson. Now suddenly everyone’s paying through the nose for him when there is no market for a guy teams know they can’t resign and who Ottawa wants to attach contracts like Ryan.

Y’all questioning Gorton, when meanwhile if it were up to some of youse, you’d be giving up the house
Who is paying through the nose? Get your facts straight and understand the situation.

He still controls where he wants to go.

I'm sure he has his mind set on location

There are not many teams that even have the opportunity to make a real offer. I'm guessing there are only 5-7 teams that can even make an offer for him. A couple of those won't even be serious offers.

If we're helping them out with Ryan or their other money problems it narrows the field. But we're not dealing from a position of strength with NHL players - like the Sens were bad as hell last year, what are we +EK, -Hayes and Buch or something like that. As good as the Flyers? Maybe?

I love him but I want to hold. And the thing that sucks is I can't see him moving somewhere else and screwing them over on the extension.

If anyone can explain me how Tampa would't be over the cap signing him, I would be grateful.

Basically with a full roster they have $4.5MM in cap space with about $11 coming off the books on D next summer. McDs contract takes away about $2MM of that.

They could probably easily find a taker in Palat and/or Killhorn. That would free up another about $10MM.

It could work but they'd have to get creative.

Karlsson to TB makes little sense. Offense isn't really their issue; it will also handcuff them with Kucherov, who's due for a massive raise.

Well, this will be key. I think he doesn't particularly care where he goes if he gets paid handsomely.

I'm curious as to what you know about EK that would make you think that? The guy is going to get paid handsomely wherever he goes. So I would assume where he goes will be equally, if not more important to him.

He wants stabillity, his injuries were no joke. So if he gets trade, lets say, for Vegas, I think he would be fine signing an extension there rather than risk injury to hit free agency.

Everyone here is. Look at the offers on this thread in the last 2 hrs. And dude your the one who doesn’t understand the context of what I’m saying. So get your facts straight and understand the situation :) :)

Not saying it does, just responding to a poster asking how'd it work. If they moved Palat and Killhorn they could sign Karlsson ar $11MM and give Kucharov $9 or $10MM. Trading those 2 players would cover Karlsson and Kucharovs raises.

They would need some ELCs to help fill holes which the will have Foote to replace Colburn.

Dont know why they would want McD, Karlsson and Hedman but who knows?

If he is traded to Vegas and likes it there by all means I can see him agree to an extension. That said, I don't think he will simply sign a contract out of fear, regardless of where he ends up.
