I think a Karlsson package starts with Hayes and Skjei.

I like those guys, but for Karlsson (as long as he extends), I move them all day, everyday. I also don’t see any other teams capable or willing of offering two young, really good players on the level of Hayes/Skjei.
I think 2 young, bonafide roster players with Ryan’s contract coming back is way too much.

His contract is actual garbage.

Acquire Horton and Martin from the Leafs along with 2019 #2 and 2019 #4 for 2019 #7.

Horton along with Hayes, ADA, Lindgren 2020 #1 and Leafs 2019 #2 for an extended Karlsson and Ryan at 50%.

BTW OTT is $235M below the watermark when it comes to profitability. Melnyk hasn't handled it too well publicly, but if you take long term debt off of the table (bad contracts), it increases the valuation of the team if they were to sell it and just move on. Remember he just took on $135M in debt through a re-fi.... and announced it publicly. I've personally never seen something like that happen. The announcement part... if that's not a plea for help, I don't know what is.

This is a team that is taking a divestiture approach to off-loading their players. When you have someone in this situation, you f*** them for all that they are worth.

Come on Gorts. Call in Slats, he's great at this stuff.

I think this is pretty close.

After all, you are talking about one of the 10 best players in the league here.

Downgrade difference from Karlsson to Skjei
Now use the other pieces to make up that difference
Upgrade from Ryan (plus contract situation) to Hayes
What else is needed to make up the difference?
I think 2 decent pieces
ADA I think is in there, still holds good value, cheap, potential, and seems to be the odd man out here
Spooner? Cost controlled, roster player

Actually, I'm pretty sure Horton contract is not insured. Columbus couldn't/didn't buy insurance on him. That's why they dumped him on Toronto for Clarkson.

Very true, the carriers would not insure the contract due to the series of concussions Horton had, and CLB still gave the contract. Clarkson had the signing bonuses that were steep, so CLB paid a premium to Vegas to take it off their hands, alongside a no 1 center that scored 41 (no one would have guessed that) and Erik Branstrom. But Vegas picks up $11M in bonus money for Clarkson, while CLB paid $9M on Clarkson, but avoided paying something like $32M on the Horton deal.

You guys are crazy thinking it’s gonna cost that much. I don’t think karlsson wants to sign anywhere but with the rangers. The rangers could wait, but they want to make and splash. They won’t be pay a lot in assets but they will help Ottawa financially and give them some pieces that will fit into their roster.
Karlsson/Ryan/andersen

But the rangers aren’t going to trade anyone who is part of the rebuild.

Exactly what I said earlier. Skjei and Hayes are the main pieces. We throw in Smith and probably a pick. I’d think we could give them our Tampa pick or our 2nd rounder to take Ryan along with Karlsson. It’s a monster offer

Say what you want but the Rangers are in a great position. They are rebuilding, they don't "NEED" Karlsson, but they can for sure pay him max dollars ... having said that, EK and Hank are super tight (don't think he wouldn't want to come here and play with him) ... then you combine the fact that we can eat Ryan's money ... who else can do that other than maybe Vegas? If we get Karlsson you can rest assured we are holding on to all our top end prospects and the youth we are building with. Sure something will go the other way, but nothing even remotely close to Karlsson's value.

Source?

One of the big drawbacks in acquiring EK is that he gets the team right back to mediocrity next season. Maybe a playoff team. Maybe win a round.

The franchise should be committed to letting the chips fall where they may for one more year. Still lacking elite talent in the system though a few kids look to have a chance. Consider opening the checkbook next offseason. That’s what I want to see.

Hayes, Spooner, DeAngelo, and 2019 and 2020 2nd rounders for Ryan with nothing retained and Karlsson extended at 8 years, $80 million. Ottawa may need to eat Brendan Smith's deal to make money work too.

I find it very curious that Namestnikov was extended so quickly and Spooner was not. I think Spooner gets dealt.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Namestnikov-Chytil-Zuccarello
Vesey-Andersson-Ryan
Fontaine/Howden-Nieves/Howden-Fast

Skjei-Pionk
Claesson-Karlsson
Staal-Shattenkirk

Lundqvist

That team can make the playoffs

With Karlsson and Henrik we make the playoffs, if we don't is because we sold our soul to acquire him.

I would feel most comfortable giving up a package that included skjei, buch, spooner, and a couple seconds. I’d consider that “fair” value, especially if we can get Ryan’s contract with a million or so retained.

Keep Anderson, chytil, and Howden. Replace Skjei from within.

Having said that, I really wouldn’t be heart broken if Karlsson was traded somewhere else and all we did was picked up a bad contract for assets.

Hayes, Skjei, Spooner, one of Hajek/Howden, and a pick (maybe a top-3 protected 2020 1st) is what it would take, IMO.

You guys are crazy. Ottawa has no leverage, your getting punch drunk over karlsson being available. Why is Tavares a once in a decade deal, karlsson is right there. Teams will offer accordingly for 1 yr of karlsson if they are told by his agent he won’t resign before free agency. Then on top of that it is ottawa’s Golden opportunity to attach Ryan without paying through the nose to clear his contract.

Gorton gets karlsson at an amazing deal I bet you. One player of consequence

Still too much for me. Take Hayes out. Make the 2nds one 1st rounder in ‘20
