GDT: Free Agent Frenzy 2022

I was expecting a bit more today but it's 1 day into free agency.

Samsonov could end up being a really good move. They have a new goalie coach with 2 guys really wanting to prove themselves for totally different reasons.

They picked up a couple guys I don't know too much about but they're 4th liners so not losing my mind over it. One of them has their name on the cup so he must of did something right other then putting a ding in the cup.

Still probably at least 3 or 4 more moves ..free agency/ trades.

I think they'll get a couple more guys that'll be good pick ups like Reese.

Then you have guys battle it out from the Marlies too. They have to get that chance at some point and Steeves, Anderson, Robertson etc all have legit shots at making it.

Just trying to look at it as a positive to have some really good competition come camp.

While Dubas is here it seems obvious he's not going to Rock the boat too much now... maybe at the deadline depending on the situation but he's saying these guys can do it. It's do or die this year forsure with these 4 core guys.

Here are our needs.
1 more 4th liner
A middle 6 player maybe 2 if they move Kerfoot. If it's better than Kerfoot, than really one.
Bottom 6 forward(this could replace the 4th liner need if the player is better)
A 7th d man.

If their scouting staff can't produce 1 4t. liner and a 7th. d man then clean house.

Can’t figure out why Holl wasn’t moved for a pick and Boosh wasn’t retained for the 750k more. Seemed like a straightforward move.

Wonder if now is a good time to trade Kerfoot. Capitalize on teams who missed on their targets. He’s ufa next year anyway. Let’s stop the lose someone for nothing philosophy.

It's always a good time to trade Kerfoot, and yet never a good time to trade Kerfoot.

Because you don't pay a #6 who averages 16 minutes and doesn't PK big money to make your team worse.

Leafs seem to flip flop between Holl being value at his cap hit and a health scratch at times. Think it stems from them undervaluing size and then seeing what size can do and feeling like they can't move off it because they never have suitable replacements on hand.

The Wings certainly spent a lot of money, but how many of those guys are actually impact players?
I think Yzerman will have that team up and running in no time. Liked the Husso, Copp and Kubalik deals, term was on point.

I’d say he’s buying some time for the younger players to break through.

I'd say there's a much better opportunity for Lyubushkin in Buffalo (and I wouldn't have matched that contract). The physicality would be better suited for someone that could play higher up in the lineup here.

Agree to disagree, Holl is a borderline 6/7 d man at this point. Lyubushkin can do a lot of the same and will at least hit anything and everything that moves. I thought he was pretty solid with Rielly.

Holl is not a borderline 6/7 defenseman. Lyubushkin has not proven he can do a lot of the same, as he can't PK and can't handle the kind of defensive responsibility that Holl undertakes.

And even if we ignore ALL of that, you don't play a borderline 6/7 defenseman 2.75 mill (if you are saying he can do a lot of the same).

Hitting is pretty much the only thing he does well, and it is safe to say we are not a team that can afford to pay 2.75 mill for a very mediocre bottom tier defenseman because he hits people. Buffalo is a team that can afford to do that.

If Lyubushkin is worth 2.75, Gudbranson is getting 4x4, etcc. then Holl is worth at least 3.5 mill... And that is massive surplus value. The only way it makes sense to move him at this point is if we really like Stralman, Pysyk, or Subban and a team gives us a stupid overpayment.

He cost the Leafs several times in the playoffs chasing hits too, and he neutered Rielly's effectiveness because of those ill timed attempted hits as Rielly was forced to cover and not attack.

He's a one trick pony. He is not worth nearly $3 million for that 1 trick.

Ideally you want someone better than both, but they did keep the better one for now.

Not going to agree on this one. Holl was healthy scratched/in and out of lineup down the stretch at most important part of the season. We had 6 better options before Holl but Keefe deemed Liljegren not good enough for some reason.

Matter of preference I guess, I don’t even think Justin Holl is as bad as people make him out to be, but for this team I’d take Lyubushkin over him at a very minimal increase. We’re not talking a 5 year term here.

My point is we know what Holl is, he’s an interchangeable player that for whatever reason management is married to.

You can say that again!
Haha something up with server, don’t know what happened there.
