Unfortunately this trade is going to be a really important for the Leafs next off season. They will have a big decision to make on Mathews and Nylander. I am hoping Calgary gets a lot in return for TChuk who as a player fits in somewhere between Nylander and Mathews abilities.

Be rather amusing if Nylander is the only one to stay.

What an absolute duster Treliving is though. Clearly he had no plan for this off-season.

It's weird how there isn't more heat on Treliving for this situation. When he signed Gaudreau to that 6 year deal, he had signed Gio to that same contract the previous year and put a "Gio cap" on future contracts. Because of that, he didn't want to sign Gaudreau for more term/money and bought only 1 year of UFA.

And then bridging Tkachuk instead of giving him a long-term deal was always going to end up a disaster.

Depends on his contract.
It seems like the rumours out there are he is gonna sign a 'team friendly' deal. If he is sub 10m, I do Matthews for 8 years of MacKinnon in a heartbeat.

I’m not worried about Matthews re-signing. One, he’s got another two years on his deal and two, he seems like he loves the Toronto spotlight and then spending his off-seasons in Arizona.

The X factor here is how much these athletes value freedom of medicine. Like it or not these measures were not well received by everyone and those with the means to lives elsewhere will.

Matthews might leave, I’ve said it before, If he is a devout believer (which I suspect is true) he may not support the politics of this corporation and he has the unique skill set to choose where he goes.

Well the big problem is a lot of the same elements in the current 4. Tkachuk would solve a huge issue of physicality in the top 6, and wouldn’t be making much more than what Nylander is going to get in a couple seasons.

The idea would be to somewhat tank the next couple seasons until Tavares is off the books anyway.

Leafs are popular, but asking the government for tax reductions for the ultra wealthy (which NHL players are) would cause serious issues even if the taxes on Sports teams rise. Plus, the NHL would probably lose their mind for parity reasons. Plus, non-resident foreign nationals are already open to a ton of tax loopholes to the extent the NBA banned them for us.


Honestly, don't really care. I guess I'm just more Torontonian than Canadian, but bitching about Ontario is an Albertan past-time.

The very first thing people need to do before proposing a trade is to look at it from the other team's point of view - where are they, and what are they trying to do..
