Kappy and A.J were 3.5m players who we replace with ??

Mik is a 4.5m player who we replaced with who ???

Hyman is a 5.5m player who we replaced with Bunting making 990K. Bunting was good playing with Matty but you can't tell me Bunting was better than Hyman in the last playoffs.

Bunting, Kampf and Kerfoot are pending UFAs that we probably won't be able to afford next year. Rinse and repeat.

No sense in debating this further, The answer will be known when the teams hit the ice.

Kappy and AJ were replaced by Mikheyev, Engvall and other internal promotions in the same way Mikheyev and Hyman were replaced by other signings and promotions. They needed cap space. Bunting, Kampf and Kerfoot will be replaced by *shocker* other players. It is funny that we're already complaining and worried about losing Bunting, Kampf and Kerfoot and we forget how they got here in the first place as if they are irreplaceable.

The point of the salary cap is identifying your franchise and elite level players and surrounding them with replaceable players. They become good, you have to replace them. It's a good problem to have. This is why teams like the Lightning, the Penguins, the CAps and the Avalanche have lost many good players over the last few years.

Definitely no point debating this further. I'd probably look at other teams and how they operate under the salary cap to understand how any of this works. You're just angry and negative to be angry and negative.

It will be a cakewalk, and right now the Leafs are the safest bet to finish 1ST in the Atlantic.
Explain this one to me. I have them projected to finish 3rd in the Atlantic based on EvolvingHockey's projected GAR for next year.

How do you remember those early 2000s Ottawa teams that got knocked out yearly by Toronto in the 1st round?

Are they still elite in your mind ?

That Ottawa team ended up making a cup finals not too many years after and likely
would have won the cup if not for Hasek getting hurt.

They added / promoted a top line centre in Spezza

They swapped Hossa for Heatley. Not saying Heatley is better but different. The group coming out of the lock out was a different team.

Those specific teams and those specific seasons, while fantastic in the regular season were mostly seen as flops, no different than Toronto.

And there are some who are mocked for believing that a young 115 point team with very few real losses - especially compared to all their rivals - is somehow worse than the team that had bottom 5 goaltending after New Years and was looking on Wish and Alibaba for goalies.

If Boston is first, the model sucks. lol

Pretty simple - Leafs have lost much less than FLA, TB, BOS.
Florida lost Marchment and Giroux who played a combined 72 games for them. They also lost Acciari, Thornton who were non-factors. They picked up Balcers and Cousins who will probably pick up half of Marchment's offense and replace his defensive value. White will be better than any of the 4th line players they lost.

Who did Boston lose?

Tampa lost Palat, Rutta, McDonagh. Cole will replace Rutta, Namestnikov will probably replace Palat in the regular season - last time Namestnikov was on the bolts he played with Stamkos/Kucherov and outpaced Palat's last 7 seasons. McDonagh will be their biggest loss but Sergachev helps absorb that loss.

1. Tampa, 2. Florida, 3. Toronto, 4. Boston. Boston would be first if they didn't have so many long term injuries.

Who did Boston add? Boston will miss McAvoy and Marchand for the first 3 months of the season. Grzelcyk is out for at least the first 1-2 months.

Florida is 1.5M over the cap. If they are signing someone, they are losing someone. There are rumours they will trade Weegar. Maybe lose Hornqvist? Who knows.

TB downgraded full stop.

The model is flawed somewhat. Because the Leafs finished ahead of TB last year, and TB lost Palat and McDonagh so far. FLA lost Marchment and Giroux so far. Leafs lost Mikheyev. I get that it's 'projections'

You are right as far as the good teams go. The bad teams seem to be closing the gap some between themselves and the good teams though. Leafs might have to work up a sweat to make the playoffs this year unlike the last two.
And Kadri is still out there available to one of the teams. He could help make a significant improvement.

One defenseman I could see the Leafs adding is Michael Stone. He's a depth RHD veteran at this point. Surprisingly really good production despite not playing much. He did play 9 games for the Flames in the playoffs too.

Him or Stralman. Would be ideal to be our 7th d. I think trading Holl for a pick and a prospect and adding another forward is the logical next step.

So much hinges on Engvall and Sandin.
Sitting with a 19 man roster, Gaudette/NAK/Malgin/Robertson in the lineup, I've got 3.7 showing for the 2 RFA's and either a spare F or an upgrade.

Leafs in theory could dump Kerfoot and Holl and make a push for Kadri, and then sign someone like Stralman for a league minimum.

It would obliterate their future cap but... It would be a fun major curve ball :D

They have projections for next year which I’m using, normalized for expected play time by line.

A reminder, last year's standings:

FLA 122
TOR 115
TBL 110
BOS 107

Now you can poo-poo those teams losing some of their best players all you want but it still won't make losing Mikheyev drop the Leafs significantly the standings.

Yeah super pathetic that the team is one of the elite teams in hockey.
What happens if the Leafs get 114 or less, will that mean that they regressed?
Heck Ill take a 2009 Pat Quinn 92 pts to make the play offs and go on a three round run if it helps.

Boston added a full season of Lindholm, Krejci, and Zacha projects to be better than Haula.

Florida will put Duclair on IR, I didn’t even factor him in for next season. They also have 8D on cap friendly.

975-1M for 1 year on Sandin? I don’t see it going more than 1 year unless they clear Muzzin out.

1.85M for 1-2 years on Engvall? First real NHL season he wasn’t waived or scratched
