What’s this about Klingberg turning down a 4 year deal from the Sens?
That's not exactly what Garrioch said.

He suggested that in theory the Senators were willing to go as long as 4 years in an offer to Klingberg, but also sort of implied that the player simply wasn't interested in coming to Ottawa. Doesn't sound like there was ever an official offer made.

Boo boo didn’t exactly say that. But sort of implied klingberg wanted to look elsewhere

Yup. Believe he said Ottawa was prepared to offer a 4 year contract but negotiations never got to that point. AKA the player wasn't interested in coming to Ottawa.

Wow, after the summer Ottawa just and the fact the org is trending in the right direction, that's a surprise.

Signing a guy at age 29 plus for 7 years is a recipe for disaster and now Calgary's done it twice in one off season with a third very possibly coming in Weegar.

It'll be good for a few years...then it won't, then it really won't. They must think they have a legit shot at a Cup and are going for it. Anything can happen, but I don't see it personally.

Meh no loss on Klingberg not coming here (Assuming an offer was made). He's an RD, but not exactly the kind of player we need. We need someone that can slow the pace and provide a more defensive role.

Good luck to him with the Quacks, but we may have dodged a bullet. Getting him would be the equivalent to when the Leafs needed to bolster their defensive game and acquired Barrie lol

Montreal gets a 1st for taking on a 6 million dollar forward, we gave up a (high) 2nd for taking on a 6 million dollar forward.
Who did we trade a 2nd for that is a 6M dollar forward? It's obviously not DeBrincat who cast a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If we're going back to Dec 2020, then it's totally an unfair comparison considering it was nearly 2 years ago in a completely different market...but I guess if we're going to pick on it, it'd be more on Ottawa's ability to evaluate talent.

I'm fairly sure we did that thinking he would rebound as a 2C-3C.

Tough spot they were in. Rebuilds can work, but its still a long road and no gaurantee.

Keep going with a decent core on the books already while having to navigate these 2-3 big contracts left when they will likely have no choice to rebuild in 4-5 years.

Or tear it down and have potentially ~5 seasons with little to no entertainment value from the on ice product.

I can see why some management/ownership groups arent so quick to just throw in the towel for half a decade hoping you come out of it in good shape and not like Edmonton/Buffalo for years.

In regards to Klingberg not wanting to come here ....

Not trying to start anything by saying this, but I can't help wonder if its going to be hard to attract non Canadians to Ottawa considering all the crazy things the Canadian government is doing right now.

You've got the ArriveCAN stuff, the new gun restrictions, some of the heaviest vax restrictions in the world, and now the Digital ID stuff that is being proposed. This is some scary stuff to people from other countries.

The difficulties at the border doesn’t help, but I don’t think hockey players care to much about gun restrictions.

If you don't want to start something, don't bring the "scary" Canadian government stuff in here. There's a generous list of shit going on in that other country the NHL plays in if you haven't noticed.

Makes you go hmm considering Zaitsev makes 2M vs Chychrun's backloaded contact. Then again someone may take Chychrun without sending salary back at all.

Just yesterday I read that Thunder Bay is the highest city in Canada in murders per 100,000 people. That would rank it 67th in the US. None of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver or Ottawa would rank in the top 100 in the US.

There's a lot more crazy shit going on south of the border than here, starting with the events in the US Capitol on January 6th

Yeah I highly doubt a Swedish person has "gun restrictions" high up on his list of reasons not to play in Canada.

Klingberg was probably all about term and nothing else. I figure he wanted to cash in on a long term retirement contract for 7 years. Didn't get it so he settled on a 1 year deal and will pursue a long term deal next summer.

Chychrun is only making $4M this year though which is less than last year. Another reason why Arizona can afford to be patient, it's the last 2 years that are the most expensive.

Say Zaitsev does go the other way, the Coyote's only save $2.4M over the next 2 years. Last year of Chychrun's contact is $7M.

Arizona would need to take on some cap $ to get to the floor, but they would likely prefer a high cap/low salary type of situation.

I kinda wonder about Calgary. Kadri is not worth 7x7...one perfect year does not erase the rest of his career. And paying a 1st round pick in what will be an amazing draft to move Monahan when he only had one year left on his contract is beyond stupid.

Edit: Doh...2025 draft. That's a bit different. And a list of conditions longer than War & Peace. Still insane.
