I could see Zaitsev going to Montreal with a 2nd (maybe more) for Ottawa-boy Paul Byron.

Habs have like 15 NHL NHL forwards and only 4 NHL D.

That Kadri deal is going to be very ugly in 3-4 years, but its fine for the Flames. They lost two stars, and Treliving has found adequate replacements to keep the Flames competitive and ice a roster that can still go deep in the playoffs.

For the next 2 seasons, the Flames should be able to go up with the best of the Pacific. Kadri will bring some agitation to the BoA that left with MTkachuk.

If the Monahan move to MTL is legit, I hope the cost to move Monahan is low, just to keep it easy for us to move Zaitsev lol. Hoping nothing more then their 2023 or 2024 first, which should be in the 20s.

Byron would be great for our bottom 6. He's got some injury history, but he'll be playing 3rd line minutes at best. Would be nice to see another Ottawa guy come play here.

I guess we'll see how he does playing on a team without anyone in the talent range of MacKinnon and Makar (Huberdeau and Rantanen are comparables).

Yeah, apparently we were interested in Burns too,

Seems odd that we're after offence from the D moreso than just a reliable top 4 presence, I think most of us assumed we would focus on strong defensive play..
I would have liked to add Burns or Klingberg to help the offence.

We don't need another older, small player and 4th liner. He is age 32, 5'9" and 158 Lbs.

He's still a decent bottom 6 guy and most importantly his contract is over at the end of this year.

Money in vs. money out is about the same for this year but saving 4.5M next year by trading Zaitsev is the real prize, hence adding a 2nd or more.

Beats trading two 2nds or more to dump all of Zaitsev's contract, even though he only costs 2.5M for the rest of this year.

I’d rather pay 2 2nds than take Byron to save a 2nd

Byron makes 2.8M in salary in 22/23, which is maybe 1-1.5M more than he's worth.

Trading an extra 2nd to save 1-1.5M is not smart.

Only way it makes sense to trade 2 2nds is if we absolutely need the extra 2.5M in cap space for a cheap top 4 D acquisition, and the team trading the top 4 D can't or won't take on Zaitsev for some reason.

What about Savard for Zaitsev straight up? Did Savard get old in Montreal or is it a Montreal thing?

He went from legit shut down top 4 guy to kinda mediocre.

I'd easily swap Zaitsev for him, but he's going to be 3rd pairing RD for us and we'd be relying on Hamonic to play on the top 4

Future considerations seems so shady. Doesn't it imply a team will eventually send the other team a pick or prospect? Is there a record of what teams have actually ended up giving? Like it seems less shady to just trade a 7th lol

I wonder what MTL does next with regards to Dach and their capspace

in one sentence 20 words or less. Break this down as accurately as you can.

I am thinking there was a 1st attached to Monahan and there are conditions around which 1st ; for future considerations.

I wish we could move Zaitsev for future considerations. One consideration may be if he is really bad that DJ Smith does an exclusive interview breaking down the finer points of his game to a panel of veteran NHL defensemen.

What’s this about Klingberg turning down a 4 year deal from the Sens?
