If we really are going hard after Chrycrun and want him you don’t wait around to see what happens to Formenton to make the deal. A different piece would be getting discussed instead.

So the notion that Formenton situation is holding up the deal is ridiculous to me

Get the feeling if Subban was white but with the same personality how he is seen around the league would be a little different.

Good on PK for not conforming.
Personality is frowned upon in the NHL no matter the race.

true but to to have personality and be black is a double whammy.

I think if he was white his enthusiasm and upbeat attitude would be more of a veteran presence and strong community guy thing instead of the "sideshow" or " he thinks in he is in the NBA" moniker he gets.

I don't think people's problem with him right now is his personality, but that his play fell off a cliff.

don't think anyone is expecting him to play at a top 4 level.

Yes, a first round pick is worth a lot. How good of a 1st round it is though depends on how well we do this year and what seed we end up finishing in. If Bedard is the prize, then top 3 protecting it makes landing Bedard unlikely. If we end up in the 20th seed overall, then they get a 12th round pick (yes, this was rather random, but just tying to illustrate). The Yotes will still draft a good player if this were the case, but not a franchise player. If we end up finishing higher than that, the pick might not even be in the top half of the 1st round.

I have no idea what will happen ultimately, and I'm just guessing like everyone else. I can see why we are optimistic given this offseason's results and what's happened in the previous five years (or so). I'm just wondering if we aren't a little too optimistic at this point. I hope my more conservative and reserved ideas are totally wrong. In this case, it would be good to be wrong.
Agreed. If the Senators improve to be a bubble team in 2022-23 then we would likely finish in the 17th to 20th spot which would have a low probability of being drawn in the lottery and no chance of a top pick due to the changes in the lottery system (maximum move of 10 spots).

However there is always a chance. :)

Maybe among fans but I doubt it amongst hockey decision makers.

100% absolute nonsense and shame shame shame on you for trying to drag up this tired old narrative. While I would agree this might have been true 10-15 years ago, The NHL would kill, and I mean that literally, to have a number of skilled black marketable hockey players that exuded the same type of charismatic, flashy, larger than life personalities that you see in the NBA and NFL.

The league is extremely desperate to destroy the narrative that hockey is a whites only sport. They so badly want more diverse representation in the hopes of appealing to a larger US and global audience. The league is desperate for a younger, more skilled Subban today than they have ever been.

Don't know if you know but coaching staffs and management staffs and players aren't the the same as NHL marketing.

No shit every large corporation wants to be seen as inclusive as possible.

I mean, not to derail the thread here, but we saw the kind of comments that Eugene Melnyk was making in regards to marketing and finding new, diverse audiences ("gays and dogs!")

The NHL, after all, is simply the owners themselves. I don't think Melnyk's attitude was necessarily unique. So I'm not convinced that the NHL would love to find a flashy, larger than life black star to compete with the NBA and NFL. They're not even marketing their boring white ones.

I would have wanted Subban on my team anytime up until 2 off seasons ago.

I wouldn't want him on the Sens even at league minimum as a 7th D. The guy has lost everything to his game that makes him good.
