At this point Klingberg is probably best off signing a 1 year contract, trying to boost his value and then get a long-term big money deal from a team next off-season when teams have more money to throw around.

If he wants to put up big numbers this year I can't see a better spot for him than Ottawa. I'd promise him the chance to run the top PP, which projects as one of the best in the league. Could put up 60-70P passing to DeBrincat and Norris for one-timers.

This is Chabot's team. Not going to Cater Klingberg in order for him to land a big contract else where

Why would we do that LOL?

Because we get arguably his best year at 30 years old without having to commit to the 34+ years or commit future dollars.

Helps us shore up on D while looking for options next year, rather than scurrying with two top 4 Do and a rookie this year. Gives us a chance to be more than a hopeful bubble team for this year, which is what we are right now with an underwhelming défense corp.

He'll be paid less than Chabot, and if Chabot cries that he's not getting PP minutes despite it being better for the team/winning, he's not the leader we think he is.

Chabot looked like he wasn't trying out there the past couple of seasons. Watch him breakout this year when the games actually matter now.

But if we were to sign Klingberg, it'd likely be more of a 1A, 1B PP scenario:

1A PP:
Tkachuk (net front)
Batherson (side of net)
DeBrincat (left side shooter)
Giroux (right side playmaker)
Klingberg (QB)

1B PP:

Pinto (net front)
Joseph/Formenton (side of net)
Stutzle (left side playmaker)
Norris (right side shooter)
Chabot (QB)

Chychrun or Severson. Klingberg is too risky for anything over 2 years. His defence somehow keeps getting worse and I don't know if Bowness' effect on his game is enough of an explanation to warrant spending big on him. It could be another Keith Yandle contract waiting to happen.

It's all about the competition and that starts in training camp. If Kling were to come here it def wouldn't be fair to promise him top PP minutes but if he earns it more then Chabot then by all means give him all the PP minutes in the world and vice versa.

More talent means more internal competition and that is always a good thing. I can already imagine the competition for ice time in our forward core. PP time and even ES time amongst the top 9 is going to be an absolute battle and that makes everyone better.

What kind of contract do you think Kilngberg gets? Could we do something like 3 years at 6.5million, or is that not enough? At least we wouldn’t have to give up assets if we can sign him.

Supposedly he wants long-term but who knows?

Also, who does he play with? Dallas had several really good defensive d-men that they paired him with. Only one we have is Zub who plays RD. Holden? I certainly wouldn't put Klingberg with Chabot or Sanderson (as a rookie).

If I had to take a stab at it:

Chabot-Zub
Holden-Klingberg
Sanderson-Hamonic
Brannstrom

Klingberg should def do a Tyson Barrie. Wonder if he'd sign for 4.5-5 mil for 1 season

Anyone signing him to 3 years probably regrets it unless it's <5.5M. Offensive defensemen just seem to fall off a cliff.

If we sign him, I'd like a whoever's buzzing gets to QB the PP approach. Both him and Chabot can take PP1 based on who's game is flowing that night. Makes it less predictable and harder to game plan against also - an issue plaguing our PP last couple years.

Ya that’s the line up I was thinking as well. Then maybe move Sanderson up if he earns it.

1. We deal with Newport a lot. Karlsson, Stone, Norris, Tkachuk. Balcers. Brannstrom. Chaisson. MDZ. Formenton. Gudbranson. Lehner. Pageau. About 10% of their clients are current or recent Senators.

2. Newport will, almost certainly, push Klingberg into a short term deal to rebuild value and try again next year or the year after. (like Barrie did with Edmonton).

I like our chances a lot more than 24 hours ago.

I mean if Sanderson is as defensively responsible as he’s supposed to be

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Klingberg

Should be two first pairs, good balance

Can also swab Klingberg and Zub when we’re down late or need a shutdown 2nd pair

yeah if we get klingberg and get rid of zaistev then this offseason would really be better then what anyone could have expected

Sanderson is a rookie, he shouldn’t be tasked with cleaning up Klingberg’s mistakes from the get-go. I’m more comfortable with a Holden-Klingberg 2nd pairing.

Not to start the season,
even Sanderson himself , said the first year UND, their team hardly had to play defence.

Sanderson seems to start off in leagues playing really conservative hockey, and then opening up as he gets more comfortable. Playing with a more offensive oriented guy might actually work well for him at the start.

Heinen re-signs in Pittsburgh for only 1M.

We're in bargain season now. This is where a budget team like the Sens should typically be more active.

Bet decent bottom 6 guys like Rodrigues, Motte, Larsson, Raffl, Ennis, Svechnikov, etc... will probably all sign for between league minimum and 1.5M.

With the status of Batherson and Formenton up in the air, should definitely add another depth forward or two.
