I don’t think Josh Brown and Reilly are the examples you want to use.

Gudbranson apparently went back to the drawing board last summer after being here and spent the offseason working mostly on pivoting and puck handling. He was pretty forthcoming that he wasn't good enough at those skills to retrieve and move pucks and was going to find himself out of the league if he didn't change it. He looked like a different player in Calgary imo.

Josh Brown was a health scratch in the playoffs, and Reilly was relegated to the third pair. Idk, I don't think we're missing anything.

I don't mind the idea of running with JBD or Thomson, but I think it's far more likely that we just keep rolling with Zaitsev if we don't go out and get someone, and frankly he's been hot garbage here. Maybe he puts in the work to correct issues in the offseason, but I'd rather not take my chances on that one.

But the reality is if the best examples you have are guys that are good enough to get by with, that's not really a reason not to seek a top4 D like we're allegedly targeting. We loaded up with Giroux and DeBrincat, I'd hate to miss the playoffs because we were trying to see if we can get by with the next Reilly or J.Brown.

Only D man we messed up on was Demelo.

The obvious answer seems to be to sign Klingberg RD on defence, but for some reason Ottawa has not acted on it yet. He would cost no assets & we would just have to come up with the salary or increase the budget to sign him. I imagine PD wants to make a deal with someone where they can unload Zaitsev's contract along with other assets that can open up enough space to pay for a RD.

If not, they could go into the yr with what they got & start looking at RDs from teams who don't look like they are going to be good enough to make the playoffs. Obviously, they will need to make a deal that reduces salary to make room for a player who could be here long term. It's likely they could start the season with the guys below & have Thomson & JBD come up as they need them & maybe we could also see a couple of the other new D they signed this summer.

Sanderson - Hamonic
Holden - Zaitsev/Brannstrom

Ownership already bumped up the budget to acquire CAT… I don’t think that’s a bottomless pit of coin…

Not a juicy rumour but Brent Wallace says Ottawa is still very much in on Jakob Chychrun on the latest Wally & Methot podcast.
