Does it, though?

We're a team that's trying to contend for a wildcard. Of course this team has holes, and will have holes. Even teams with their eyes set on the Cup have holes.

The Leafs are dressing Murray and Samsonov in net and have Justin Holl in their top 4.
The Panthers have 1 true "top 4" defenseman - Aaron Ekblad. Everyone else is a tweener.
The Oilers' #2 is Tyson Barrie and #3 is Cody Ceci.

This team is going to have holes.

If a guy becomes available, of course we should try and acquire him. But "must" it be addressed before September? Not really.

Lot's can happen in the first couple of months. If the Islanders or Wild get off to a bad start, Dumba and Mayfield may suddenly become available for a pick and prospect.

You don't go out and add DBC, Talbot and Giroux only to leave massive black holes on defense. That's literally a useless waste of resources. We got these guys for a few years and our window could be opening sooner than later, so there's absolutely no reason to take a "wait n see" approach to the D, otherwise this is an half-assed job by Dorion.

Chabot - Zub > Solid top pair
Sanderson - XXX > I trust the scouting staff in evaluating Sanderson's readiness, and based on what we've seen from other young defenseman in recent years (Seider, Hughes, Heiskanen, McAvoy, etc) think he'll be able to step right in
Holden - Hamonic - Solid bottom pair

We have one hole, and it's big, but it's not massive. Even if we go into the season with this:

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Hamonic
Holden - Zaitsev

I think that's good enough to be in the mix for a playoff spot until Christmas when guys will become available. It's certainly better than what we started with last year:

Chabot - Zaitsev
Holden - Zub
Mete - J.Brown

Those were the pairings in Game 1 last season. Sanderson will be a huge upgrade on Mete and Hamonic is much better than Brown.

Yeah, I wouldn't rush to fill the defensive hole if the price is too high. Players become available, keep at it Dorion.

Top-4 dmen are notoriously hard to come by, this is a known fact.

There were a high number of them available this summer, and only a few left now. Prices will only get higher to find one the less are out there. Is it really worth greatly improving our offense only to have a porous backend, possibly causing us to be out of the playoff picture by January? Sounds like a terrible plan considering the last five years we've been through. We have the assets, we have a top-6 that can compete for a playoff spot, the time is now.

I think he will, but it might not be until the first month or two of the season. I dunno...I wouldn't even bother looking at Chychrun personally. I'm not giving up Pinto or Greig, so that's that.

I seriously don't get why we didn't get Morino, unless they wanted Greig or Pinto.

But f*** it, not giving up the two top prospects we have IMO. Wait until someone dumps a vet with a year or two.

I have a bad feel both won't be dressing for the Sens again...hope I'm wrong
No playoffs for us then. f***, if that happens it's literally that we can't have nice things.

Agree
Imagine if Zub hadn't pan out the way he went...
Thats why I was so high on Drysdale...
Sanderson supposed to be 90% Makar so super confident and its a no brainer but that right side of the D has been a weakness since EK65 left

Ennis is a bad hockey player. He runs around looking very active and accomplishes absolutely nothing. He has absolutely zero hockey sense. He is basically a small Scott Sabourin.

Scratch him every third game = hat trick every third game

Realistically we’re looking for a solid second pairing D. If things pan out the way they should in regards to Sanderson, it’s a guy that is a complementary top 4 guy.

We have guys in the system that have the potential to be that guy, and while the immediate need is clear, in my opinion it’s not worth trading away key assets to get a guy that only needs to third or fourth best out of four.

Thy also doesn’t consider contracts. We have two big guns on D. It makes way more sense to add another Zub-type defender that is excellent defensively, but won’t be commanding Chabot/Sanderson(potentially) level contracts.

Our first, Grieg, Boucher, Ostapchuk, Pinto, Kleven, Soogard, should all be off the table in my opinion, as we don’t need to add a player that would cost any of that to acquire.

Thank you for posting this. I feel like I've been taking crazy pills, as I could never stand Ennis but the fanbase in general seems to love him.

I've never seen a player corkscrew himself from a good position to facing the boards in the corner, surrounded by three players, so often.

Plus for all we know maybe Thomson,JBD or Brannstrom steps it up big time at camp and establishes themselves as a top4 D.

well that was the expectation for each of them so I guess it’s not too out of the realm of possibility. I like thomson out of the bunch just a hair more than the other two

I think we should run
Chabot- Brannstrom
Sanderson - Zub
Holden - Hamonic

Really liked the small glisp we got for the chab brann pair

Better win all faceoffs when your Chabot Brannstrom pair is on the ice.
