Having failed to acquire Marino, Weegar and assuming we can't sign Klingberg, at this point I'd just trade for Holl as a cheap reclamation project at RD who can push Zaitsev out of the lineup.

Teams are practically giving away top 6 forwards to dump cap. Shudder at what the cost would be to dump Zaitsev. We already paid his 2M bonus so he only costs 2.5M in salary for the rest of this year. Should just keep him and try to dump his contract next off-season, or perhaps in a trade for a top 4 D at the deadline.

Now is also not the right time to go all-in by acquiring a guy like Chychrun given we don't know what's happening with Batherson and Formenton.
Even without Batherson and Formenton for the season, which is highly unlikely, the forward group is good enough to contend for the playoffs, as is the goaltending. The D needs a top 4 D badly or else we armrest looking at a wasted season.

He wasn't terrible, there was nothing wrong with him at all. Terrible = Shitbird Paquette or Chiasson.
Ennis is a bad hockey player. He runs around looking very active and accomplishes absolutely nothing. He has absolutely zero hockey sense. He is basically a small Scott Sabourin.

Trades for DeBrincat- "Holy shit we're actually getting a good winger for the top-6!"
Trades for Talbot - "Wowwww and now our goaltending is solid AF!!!"
Signs Giroux - "Frik me we're going all in our top-6 is one of the best in the whole goddam league!!!!!1!!!"
............

Signs Holl in August - *sad trombone sound* "Looks like we're a bubble team I guess."

we have many Holls

we don't need more
It was Ennis, but I agree with that too. Just unleash Thomson or JBD

He was a great forechecker. One of the best on the team. Perfect (little) 4th liner.

The only top 4 D that are reportedly available are Chychrun and Klingberg.

Klingberg isn't the perfect fit but he's a no brainer signing on a short-term deal.

If Klingberg won't sign on a short-term deal in Ottawa, are you prepared to trade Greig + 2023 1st + additional pieces for Chychrun? Yotes' asking price has been extremely high.

Zaitsev could be taken on by AZ in the trade (assuming he'd waive to go there) but they wouldn't just take him on for free. Would likely cost at least two 2nds given what they demanded from NY to take on Nemeth's smaller deal.

We don't know the status of Batherson and Formenton next season. We also don't know if DeBrincat is going to be an Ottawa Senator beyond 2022/23. As bad as we need a top 4 D, now is not the time to go all-in on a Chychrun-type acquisition. Have to be smart about it.

I have a lot of time for Tyler Ennis but last season was pretty disappointing. He was very ineffective most nights, not nearly as good as his first season.

I think the Chykrun ask comes down if it ever really was that high. A protected 2023 1st + a couple 2nds + 1 of the 3 young D prospects + a young roster forward or prospect (not Greig) + Zaitsev. The longer it takes the less he returns.

So basically Thomson/JBD/Kleven + Jarventie/Boucher/Ostapchuk/Sokolov + 2023 1st for Chychrun?

I'd certainly be fine with that, but I don't think the Yotes are going to entertain trading Chychrun to Ottawa without Greig and the 2023 1st being a part of the deal.

Even if the asking price of Chychrun is high, you pay it! Need to give up something to get something

Our need is a top 4 or better Dman, and it must be addressed before September

Not sure why we are holding on to Pinto, Sololov, Boucher, Greig etc.

Package them up with a 1st and get it done. Throw in 1 of Brannstrom, JBD or Lassi, as well

I'm kinda surprised you don't like Hawryluk. He personifies the type of player you like.
He's a bubble player who brings very little to the team & IMO we have better players who I would prefer to watch in Belleville. I get that they are part-time players when injuries occur, but isn't that what the farm team was for?

Does it, though?

We're a team that's trying to contend for a wildcard. Of course this team has holes, and will have holes. Even teams with their eyes set on the Cup have holes.

The Leafs are dressing Murray and Samsonov in net and have Justin Holl in their top 4.
The Panthers have 1 true "top 4" defenseman - Aaron Ekblad. Everyone else is a tweener.
The Oilers' #2 is Tyson Barrie and #3 is Cody Ceci.

This team is going to have holes.

If a guy becomes available, of course we should try and acquire him. But "must" it be addressed before September? Not really.

Lot's can happen in the first couple of months. If the Islanders or Wild get off to a bad start, Dumba and Mayfield may suddenly become available for a pick and prospect.

Always been nervous of trading for players from horrible teams with some good stats. Is Chychryn actually good or is he just the best Dman on a terrible team so he appears good? Have heard mixed scouting reports on him, sure he’s in the shit every shift but negeative commnets come from his engagement level and skating and defensive hockey sense.

I wouldn’t throw a boat load to get him, I don’t think he’s as good as we all think he is

If it’s down to Chychrun for Grieg/2023 1st/Pinto as the core of the +++ vs. a 2 or 3 yr deal for Klingberg at around 7 you do Klingberg all day.
The key is being a little ruthless with the guys who aren’t your core like Klingberg.
ie. if it’s a 3 yr deal with Klingberg we all know yr 3 is issue for cap wise, you trade him in the summer between yrs 2-3 period. We get 2 yrs of Klingberg plus the asset he return which should be pretty good.

He’s a good D man. A top 4 of Chabot, Sanderson, Zub and Chykrun is amongst the best in the league within a year or 2 and good enough to be a playoff team this year.

Holl is bottom pairing in TO behind Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie and Gio. They also haven’t won a playoff round since early this century.

Edmonton is only a contender because the West is terrible overall.

Florida’s tweeners would likely be on our 2nd pair but losing Weeger is going to hurt BAD.

He's a half point per game in his stints with us

If Mark Giordano is in your top 4, at this stage in his career, and you have cup aspirations, that's a huge hole.

Montour/Forsling/Gudas/Carlsson/Staal are no better than the likes of Holden/Hamonic/Zaitsev/Brannstrom/Thomson.

Edmonton is a contender because while they're defence has issues, their offence can compensate for those deficiencies.

My point is every team has holes. We will as well.

While we should try and improve the D, it's not a failure going into the season with what we have.

It is a failure since it was a specific area Dorion wanted to address. Now I’m not saying if a deal doesn’t materialize it’s not due to incompetence, the opposite is true. Don’t blow your brains out to get something done if the right deal isn’t there.
