Looking like Stankoven is the first piece

Guessing the Brock Nelson package might have helped set the price.

Maybe Stankoven, a 2026 or 2027 1st, and a few B or C level pieces.

Stankoven is a very good piece to get for a rental, but unless it is a lot more than Nelson went for, the Rantanen trade is a complete failure on the part of Carolina with the pieces that they originally gave up. The only upside would be that it probably saved them from paying through the nose for Pettersson, who is now universally considered to be the world's highest paid ECHLer if I am correct in what I read here.

This could be a serious problem for Tulsky depending on how sideways this goes.

What a messy situation for a team that's supposed to be contending.

Respect Carolina for not being delusional about what was going on here. They took a shot, offered a monster contract to Rantanen and he didn't want to be there. That's life in the modern NHL; if you aren't one of the handful of no-tax meme teams you pretty much can't compete any longer.

To be honest this was a massive mistake and it was an easily avoidable one.

They had a player making 6.5M who was a great fit on their roster with an additional year and they traded him for a player who was shocked to be dealt and they had no clue if he wanted to sign there.

You’re right that a few teams have advantages but this was a dumb move that backfired. I’m a GM no way I’m trading Necas for someone unless I know 100% he is signing with my team. I look at this situation and it really has nothing to do with the tax free states and the hot weather. It’s really a GM making a huge huge mistake.

Right now they could be adding to what they already had but at this stage they are taking a step back and that’s really a tough go for a team that was looking for more offense. They end up losing some.

The Rantanen situation reminds me of the Duchene trade. They took a huge swing to try and upgrade a roster player and got nothing out of it. The situations aren't 100 percent the same, but they feel very similar with Carolina getting no playoff games out of an acquisition that was supposed to put them over the top.

The only thing you can say is that they have some conviction dealing him now, because the easy thing to do as a GM would have been to keep him for the playoffs and hope the team goes on a run so that you can justify the trade.

It is kind of a disaster situation for the Hurricanes, although I guess I should reserve final judgment on that until I see exactly what they get from Dallas. But on some level I have to respect them for going for it.

You need players of Rantanen's calibre to win, but the reality seems to be that these players are now largely out of reach for most markets. So if you want them you have to be willing to run a massive risk. Maybe that's the mistake Tulsky made - not being willing to proceed if the worst possible scenario plays out. That said, I think it was smart that they made the original acquisition early. It gave them time to reverse course and salvage something from a bad situation.

Perhaps if Rantanen had come into Carolina and been a great fit and really productive then maybe they're more willing to let it ride. The easy thing to do is to just let him play it out, leave as a UFA and say 'that's how it goes'.

I think Tulsky is doing what's right for the long-term future of the Carolina Hurricanes here rather than what's safe for him personally and career-wise, and I respect that a great deal. I think this is an area where the Ottawa Senators often got it wrong - more concerned about optics and stringing the fans along than they were about doing what's right for product.

So something may or may not happen. It might be trade related but it might not be. Wow, you're giving Dreger a run for his money with that waffling lol
I haven’t waffled.
Sens operating outside of the norm on trade day tomorrow. Their “setup” for tomorrow if very different than in the past, but that’s as much as I’ll say.

Considering yet another very positive night in the out of town scoreboard, it'd be unfortunate if Staios can't give this team any sort of boost.

Even the mental aspect of "okay we're going for it" would be good for this group, who's only ever known selling.

IMO, we either take the next step, make the playoffs, and keep this core together. Or we miss and enter a retool in the summer. So what's like a 2nd and 3rd to make a bit of an upgrade now?

Unfortunately, I think it will cost substantially more than that for any sort of upgrade. Plus, we can't take on much cap, so it's all really tricky.

what the hell does that even mean lol
The players are acting as management and the management staff are suiting up for practice on the ice. Nick Cousins is making the trades.

This has never been seen before.

Supposedly Staios didn’t travel with the team to Chicago and stayed in Ottawa instead. Not sure if that’s what he’s referring to though, probably not.
