If this is true, kudos to Marner. Smart boy.

Can you imagine him with Rob Brindamour???? Yikes. (Btw, I really don’t like him so don’t care how he spells his name.)

Marner isn't a 100 point player with Matthews, Nylander, Tavares.... he most definitely won't be a 100 point player in Carolina. 13 million dollars for a 70 point player.

Ahh. Understood. Could be one of things where whats best for the ownership may not be best for the team.
The rebuild was best for the team. I was thrilled. Did they finally really get it?

Hanging on to the same core ad nauseum when it there is clearly something wrong just because you want to sell jerseys and collect a round of playoff revenue...we'll, that's a page out of 2005-era Leafs ownership. Winning the Matthews lottery, though thrilling at the time, rushed the rebuild too.

It's a wasted era. They're going to hold onto much of this group until AM34 is broken (so sooner rather than later) and then tear it all down again. The unlikely hope is that they fluke into a Cup for one magic year. I'm not holding ny breath.

It still shocks me Dubas gave contracts to carry them right to UFA with a NMC at the end for the absolute max dollar while they were RFA’s. Unbelievable.

Leafs got screwed by COVID more than most teams because of the timing with their team build.

They never benefited from the period where those RFA contracts would have deflated and allowed them to load up.

With that said, the biggest mistake Dubas made was underrating the market value of Matthews. He apparently could have had him at 8 by 12M or something close to that, but thought it was too steep. Then Matthews started strong and there was fear about what Arizona might do in the offseason, and the price shot way up. This was covered by Friedman around the time he signed.

That completely threw off their entire cap structure because they had Marner thinking he was the Kane to Matthews Toews. They never got the term needed to benefit from cap inflation, and then COVID stopped cap inflation completely during the few years the Leafs had to build around those contracts.

Do we know if Rantenan was even willing to sign in Toronto

He was willing to sign long term in Edmonton but Carolina declined on the assets Edmonton was willing to trade

That was fishy speculation to me. Usually the deal needs to be in place before the team lets you negotiate with the player. Don't see how the Oilers even got there.

Treliving has a magic ability to chase stars out of town.
Nylander and Matthews have both re-signed under Treliving. Marner by all reports wants to stay in Toronto but will not negotiate in season (I'm guessing he wants to have a great season and absolutely destroy us for every penny like last time)

I think no one wanted to play in Calgary

I think Dallas did the same though. They wanted to see if they could sign him long term and then they worked out the trade

Everything reported says the complete opposite. The deal was agreed upon but the terms weren't met until the next day (Friday). Friedman reported it on Thursday.

That's the question the Marner haters refuse to answer they just waant him go just to have him gone.

Change is fine but you have to replace Marner how do you do that?
11-14 million in cap space is how. You won't find anyone as good as him of course but more depth scoring and maybe a big upgrade on Defence and maybe that makes up up for him walking.

No surprise he wouldnt waive to go to CAR, but reading between the lines says hes going to UFA. Tor losing him for nothing is going to hurt.

It doesn't feel like he's going to leave

It feels like he's going to leverage UFA and potentially a strong playoff run to bleed us dry. He doesn't want to leave, he wants to cash out in Toronto

Rantanen signing yesterday was the best case scenario for Mitch, there's no one competing with him for top dog on the market come July 1. Teams will throw themselves at Marner and he will use that to get 13+

Maybe Matthews doesn't get more than 30 goals a year without Marner??

Well we have a thing called stats that we can look at and check:

In 2023 and 2024 seasons Matthews played approximately 50% with Marner and 50% without Marner (1145 mins with 1260 without). Matthews has been significantly more productive without Marner on his line. A little backwards isn't it? Shouldn't Matthews be more productive with a 11 million dollar winger on his line?

It's crazy that he wouldn't even say something as generic as "ofcourse I love the Leafs and the boys in the locker room, it is my intention to represent this team and the city, we will see how the business side of things sort themselves out, for now I am focused on bringing a Stanley Cup to this city".
