Pinto for Bennett.
Too bad Bennett is UFA that would be a mystery as to his contract, he is having a good season so around 5 or 6 million and he probably wouldn't sign here?

I liked Pinto a lot but the injuries, the gambling suspension.

Perron is untradeable so the third line would be...
Greig-Bennett-Perron

I wish we lived in a world where we singed Guentzel instead of Perron, with the money we saved by buying out Norris before it was too late (33%). I also wanted Farabee for pennies on the dollar, but unfortunately those deals now reside in fantasyland.

The focus should be a winger like McCann. We have one in Norris (speedy goal scorer), but Green refuses to play him at wing for whatever reason... probably the same reason he loves Hamonic.

Speaking of Hamonic and Green loving him... I doubt he gets replaced for that exact reason. We also don't really need a long-term fix there with Yakemchuk likely playing next year alongside Zub and Jensen.

Norris was injured, so he couldn't be bought out.

The way a buyout would have been structured last season was very close to getting out of the entire contract for nothing, because we would have been given a cap credit for his contract being back loaded, and it would have had the U26 formula. So I wonder if they would have pulled the trigger on that if the trade market was soft.

With that said, getting a player like Guentzel in free agency would have been a pipe dream.

I wouldn't take Bennett for free. He needs PP time to be effective (and has still never scored 50 points in a season), can't play PK, is horrible on the dot, and takes stupid penalties. In a sheltered role behind a Selke calibre guy like Barkov, Bennett's deficiencies can be overlooked but he's getting exposed as a 3rd line centre on Ottawa.

Once we get possession sure.

When we’re trying to get it, no.
Kleven on his own side of the ice is a tad slow; the pressure will be on him no matter who his D partner is. Playing with Karlsson at RD, Kleven would likely have less pressure because Karlsson would be getting to the puck first and either skating the puck out or passing it to our Fs. Kleven would benefit from that.

I was already against trading Norris for Pettersson and now I am more convinced it's a bad idea.

He has been totally invisible in the 4 Nations so far. The upside is waning for me.

Loads of talent, lacking heart IMO. Emo, mopey player that oozes bad energy.
you would be buying low and working him back up

hence why he would be avaliable

but he is off the trade market now

I wonder if teams are going to call about Mantinpalo.

Green barely plays him. His stock is up with the tournament. He is an arbitration eligible RFA, but could likely be extended for very cheap.

Does he replace one of Zub or Jensen long term, or does he become the next Demelo, who we sell off for a draft pick?

Especially if we are looking to bring in a veteran #5 type, that makes it even less likely that he will be given the chance to move up the lineup, let alone play this season. I wonder if he becomes a trade chip.

I don't see us moving him, he's a good bet to replaced Hamonic and JBD as our 6/7 RHD next year imo. and the value you could get from him right now is likely not worth moving.

why would ottawa trade their depth

Erik f***ing Karlsson (30%)
for
David Perron, Forsberg, 1st Round Pick (2025)*

Some cap juggling will be required but doable.
*I would have given them the forfeited 1st round pick but then again I am not Pierre Dorion ;).

One way of doing a deal for EK65 if there is any merit to Nick Kypreos saying Ottawa is interested.

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-EK65

That's insane. Unlikely, but an insane what if scenario.

If we didn't owe the league a 1st, your proposal would be pretty solid. Pittsburgh would need to retain slightly more to make it work cap wise since it's two roster players for 1, but that's a small alteration.

I don't think we move our 1st unless Pittsburgh is okay with us protecting it until 2027. My guess is that this year's 1st goes to Bettman if we make the playoffs. It would be crazy to give up an unprotected 2026 to either Pittsburgh or Bettman.

I also don't think we trade Perron, even if he has not been good. We clearly targeted veterans, and he is seen as a leader in the group. In some way, he's doing his job.

I can't see an avenue for us getting Karlsson without moving Norris or Chabot, and at this point moving Chabot to bring in Karlsson would be ill-advised.

why would ottawa trade their depth

We are asset poor. In a scenario where they want to acquire a veteran #5D who Green will play for 18+ minutes, Mantinpalo moves down to 8 or 9 in the depth chart behind Hamonic and Kleven.

If a team is willing to give us a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Mantinpalo, I wonder if they might view it as selling high on a player who is stuck playing 10 minutes a night in Green's lineup, will be 2 injuries away from figuring in, and is a year away from unrestricted free agency.

I would like to see what he can do in a bigger role, but this isn't me suggesting we move him. It's me wondering if we would listen on him if we plan to add another defenseman who would push him even further down Green's depth chart.

That is the ideal scenario, but I wonder if they view it that way internally. He has gotten public praise from multiple people in the org, including Staios, but the reality is that he still struggles to get minutes under Green. So I wonder if they go after a #5 type D who Green trusts, and push Mantinpalo further down the depth chart, would they be open to "selling high" if a team put a 2nd or 3rd on the table for a player who at the start of the season might have been worth a late pick at most.

So they trade a young, cheap emerging RHD for a draft pick that might, five years from now, provide similar value? This would be like trading Artem Zub ten games into his career because DJ Smith is playing Josh Brown and Braydon Coburn over him. Deployment can change.

We're witnessing a guy emerge and claim an NHL job. As of now, I'm expecting to see him play over Hamonic more and more down the stretch, and I'm pencilling him in as the 3rd pairing RHD to start next season.

I view Matinpalo as a 3rd pairing defensive defenceman & don't see him moving up in the lineup but I do expect he will be re-signed. Hamonic will be gone at the end of this season & I expect that if Ottawa does make a trade before the deadline JBD could be part of a package.

Jensen's contract ends after next season & I expect Yakemchuk will be ready to take his spot along side Chabot. They could move Jensen & his $4 ,il contract this summer too before the season in order to afford a better player in free agency who could improve the team. I like Jensen, but he will be gone soon & maybe it's better to make a move to acquire a better younger player is the right move.

I see some rumours involving Kyrou and other teams. I wonder why St.Louis would want to trade their leading scorer?
Would love it if Armstrong went full wacko and traded us Kyrou for Norris.

We get a scoring winger for Stu who can stay healthy.

We'll worry about teaching him defense later

You want to bet $3.6 more per year in cap hit for more years that he may bounce back?

No thanks. At least Norria fills multiple roles and is a competitive guy who fits in the room well.

He is also ramping up after 2 years of basically no hockey.

Kyrou being right handed makes it very intriguing if there is any truth to Canadian teams having a difficult time spending to the cap going forward.

His contract was front-loaded. After this season, he has a 7.5M real money AAV for 6 more years, that also includes him only making 6.6M for the final four years of his contract when the cap is going to be close to 120M.

Norris makes an average of 8.52M over 5 years, and the injury concerns also make the dicey because it introduces the dynamic where the Senators might be paying him not to play at certain points.

Since Norris joined the Senators roster full time in 2020-21, out of a possible 358 games, he has only played 230. If you remove his last full healthy season in 2020-21 (56 game season), it looks even worse. All of a sudden he has only played 174 of a possible 302 games.

Is Kyrou a great pickup? Maybe not. But we badly need a right handed forward who can score and possibly play with Stutzle. If they are willing to entertain a swap for Norris, it becomes an intriguing proposition strictly from a value standpoint if there is no market for Norris.

On a side note, St.Louis would be a DJ Smith hiring away from becoming front runners for Brady Tkachuk. Robert Thomas, Josh Norris.

Unless Staios is on some Dorion level shitz he can't be trading Matinpalo. Matinpalo give us every reason to not keep Hamonic and he's already better than JBD.
does this answer change if we dont play matinpalo

let me start off by saying i would make matinpalo a regular. That being said his value is higher now then it has been ever (if we are talking from an asset point of view). If we arent going to play him regularly then his value will just go down from here

This is it.

If they think by adding a veteran D, he would move down to the 7th-8th spot in the depth chart - it makes sense to sell high.

That isn't justification for possibly missing on another Demelo, but when he does play he is barely deployed. With how asset poor we are, if a team is willing to give us a 2nd or 3rd for an arbitration eligible RFA who we aren't using, we have to think about that.

I think they should give him a shot in a greater role, but the discussion is predicated on the idea that Green may continue to use him in a limited role.

you're being too nice, i see hamonic getting regular reps as the #6 dman and matinpalo sitting to be honest

matinpalo playing over hamonic is a lot more valuable to ottawa, however if he going to be in the press box i rather get that hypothetical pick that you were describing or use him as an asset to get a winger

Staios can always extend him to a cheap 2 year deal and let Hamonic walk. We're pretty asset depleted but I feel like Matinpalo is more valuable to us as a 7th D that turns into our 6th D next year over a 4th or 3rd we might get for him.
