Not sure, he left the USHL to play in London, why would he go to school? I believe he mentioned school before he decided to go to London. He'll be 20 yrs old in May & will be eligible to play in Belleville. He could also decide to return to London as an overaged player. Should be interesting what he decides but my guess would be London or Belleville & Belleville makes more sense to me. We'll see.

Oliver Bjorkstrsnd is a player I could see Ottawa going after for a RW who can score, skate - he’s small but his ticket is big and I don’t think woild cost a ton on assets. Makes $5.4 this season and next and then is a FA. Smallish so might not be what Staois is going for

Playing in London vs the USHL makes no difference anymore for guys who wanted to play a year or two prior to the NCAA, with the OHL being a better league for junior aged players. Especially for already committed guys.

As of right now, he's still enrolled on the 2025-26 Wisconson roster, we will see if that changes.

He's not likely to be signing with Belleville this year as London are not going to be out of the playoffs early enough, and he was always going to be a longer term guy.

NCAA for a year or two makes a ton of sense for a guy like Montgomery

Why would he leave London - perfect set up for him. Sens seem to be supporters of the OHL and the CHL in general and I wonder if they make him stay?

If that was the cost to get Bjorkstrand it would have already been done even with our cap space issues. @majormajor What would you like for Bjorkstrand?

Seattle needs capspace to extend Kakko and make some more FA mvoes to shore up their roster. They'll have that capspace with Gourde and Tanev coming off the books and I'm not sure if Bjorkstrand will get moved for JBD and a 3rd. If Staios can pull that off, that be next level robbery.

That won’t happen in season, if happens, as can’t make the cap work on that deal.
 
Damn, Barrie must really have fallen off

Wouldn't hurt to pick him up to get some of our offense going. Super low risk move, but probably not likely to push the needle much

  1. This trade operates under the assumption that Rantanen wants to test the open market, and Carolina doesn't want to lose him for nothing.
  2. They pursue a hockey trade because they are contenders, and the return on Rantanen when it's known he won't sign in season is going to be your typical TDL return of a 1st+++, which doesn't help them recover the loss of Necas.
  3. Carolina apparently was interested in Pettersson but chose Rantanen.
  4. Kotkaniemi was a name thrown around in the Pettersson talks.
  5. There was still speculation about Vancouver possibly moving Pettersson later on after the Miller trade. We'll assume that with his poor showing at the 4 Nations, and the previous issues in the room, they get cold feet about keeping him beyond when his NMC activates on July 1st.
  6. We'll assume that Carolina isn't swayed by those problems, and maybe the fear over having to flip Rantanen for pennies on the dollar incentivizes them to make a hockey trade for a different superstar and hope it works.
  7. Rantanen WILL NOT sign with Ottawa. This trade assumes there is zero chance. We can't afford him. This is a Hail Mary move to make the playoffs and do some damage.
  8. This is also a move to get out of the Norris contract. We will assume Ottawa wants it off the books.
  9. Hoglander is moved to Carolina to offset some of the Kotkaniemi money. He is an easy piece to include because he only makes 1M this season, which helps balance some of the cap. While Carolina likely does not covet Hoglander, it does give them an additional roster player for their playoff push.
  10. Soucy has a NTC. We will assume that the market for him is minimal, and it's Ottawa or waivers since he does not have a NMC. He has likely worked with Mike Yeo before since Yeo was the Wild coach at the time Soucy came through their system, and he was a coach in Vancouver last year.
  11. Rantanen only has a 9 team no trade list. Given the Senators stature and the question about whether a Canadian team with our market limitations could sign him to a market value extension, I would imagine there is a chance that his agent didn't waste a spot on them. Similar to the speculation that Ullmark didn't put Ottawa on his list at the start of last year because we just committed to Korpisalo.

Cap In/Out
  • Carolina moves 9.4 out and has 2.4M in LTIR space with Fast out for the season. For a total of 11.8M in cap. They take in 12.6M of cap, but would place Nils Hoglander (1.1M in cap relief) on waivers as part of the trade. He would almost certainly clear, and if he is selected that is a benefit to them since they only take him to offset dumping Kotkaniemi.
  • Ottawa moves out 8.8M over two roster players, they take in just shy of 8M over two roster players. There is also the possibility that Ottawa could give Vancouver or a third party team a late pick to retain on Rantanen if they want to open up space to make another addition.
  • Vancouver takes in 13.6M over 3 players, they dump 14.85M over 2 players. Assuming a player is assigned to the minors in an offsetting move to make room for JBD, they actually dump closer to 15.6M. That leaves a nice cushion to possibly retain on Rantanen and still have the trade be cap in/cap out.
Vancouver gets a long-term center who is close with Quinn Hughes, who they are going to have to confront re-signing in about a year.

Carolina gets their 1B choice from earlier in the season. They don't lose Rantanen for nothing. They avoid trading him for a rental return, which would pale in comparison to what they gave up.

Ottawa goes all in on a playoff run to try and prove to their various stakeholders (fans, season ticket base, Brady, the people of Quebec City, etc) that they are a serious organization who wants to put their balls on the table and win now. They also get out of the Norris contract, which seems to be a priority if the rumours/speculation are accurate about shopping him.

I see no world in which Vancouver makes that trade.

We make out like absolute bandits and immediately flip Rantanen for a lesser player + futures. Carolina makes out like bandits and wonders how the hell they turned Necas into a pure rental and then immediately turned that pure rental into Pettersson.

I don't think Rantanen is worth anywhere near what Carolina paid as a rental.

What is the most any team has paid for a rental in the last few years? Maybe Claude Giroux, but Owen Tippet was probably closer in value at that point to something like what Kakko went for.

If Carolina trades him, it's because he won't re-sign. Rantanen testing the market is going to make him a lot less appealing than he was last month.

Pettersson is coming off of a terrible showing in a best on best tournament, and already has strikes against him in Vancouver. Most of all, his NMC kicks in on July 1st. The trade proposal only makes sense if Vancouver has cold feet about keeping him, and has limited options to move him and get back useful pieces.

I will add, it's a base/proof of concept. If any of the three teams should have to add additional value in the form of futures, then there something easy to change it account for. Unless it's so far off that you think one team has to add multiple 1st round picks.
 
If the Canes were to turn around and deal Rantanen as a rental they'd easily get a couple 1st round picks or similarly-valued assets.

We're not getting that kind of trade value for Norris and JBD, even if we took on Soucy's contract as well.

Rantanen's value doesn't matter much, it is still way more than what we could get for the pieces we're sending out. If we could get a package like Pittsburgh got for Guentzel, or even better... that would make things look a whole lot brighter moving forward.

As for Vancouver's side of the deal, so what his NMC kicks in? What's going to happen? He will demand a trade out to a specific city and they will get a big pile of "meh" like, what... Norris, Kotkaniemi, and Bernard-Docker?

I don't have anything to add that wouldn't be us going back and forth, but I appreciate your constructive discussion of the proposal.
