I just don’t see the fit
This is Sanderson's team now on defence, he is playing great & will only get better. Next yr they can add Yakemchuk at some point to play with Kleven & add some offence to the back end with Matinpalo as the 6th.

That probably makes JBD expendable although he has a little more offence to his game than Matinpalo.

I wish we could somehow trade Zub plus whatever and get Parayko. ( I know I am dreaming in Technicolor.....
I like Zub a lot, but the injuries, and it would nice to have an upgrade in Sanderson's partner to take us to another level.

Sanderson and Parayko would be quite a great tandem.

Sanderson- Parayko.
Chabot- Jensen
Kleven- Matinpalo.JBD

Then in 2026-27
Sanderson-Parayko
Chabot-Yakemchuk
Kleven-Jensen
Matinpalo/ JBD

Not at his Pittsburgh salary. There would have to be retention by Pittsburgh and/or some salary moving to Pittsburgh. Plus draft picks.

Some think our D is fine as it is. I don't; I think it needs improvement.

Karlsson would definitely improve our D if we retained the top 4 we have now (Chabot, Sanderson, Jensen and Zub).

However, adding Karlsson would certainly increase the salary AAV of our 6 D, so that increase would have to drawn from the salary dollars of our Fs and Gs.

Forsberg will be gone next season ($2.75M) and likely replaced by a cheaper backup goaltender (Merilainen $1M).

The cap is going up too so that provides some $$$.

Trading Perron could add more $$$ but might cost us a draft pick to trade him without getting a poor player back. Then we also need to acquire a real top 4 F.

I think acquiring Karlsson could be done BUT I don't think it will happen.

Also can George St.Pierre skate?
He would be a good fourth liner that no one would mess with. ;)

I think Matinpalo has as much if not more offence than JBD. He is playing conservatively but we have seen flashes of his ability and willingness to skate the puck forward down the half wall and angle toward the net with an offensive mindset. Small indicator but there's a little bit there. He can also skate well enough to get back. In the 4 nations he has been up on the rush a few times. I think there is something there he is just playing conservatively for now.

Add that to his size, physicality and D play and I think he is 100% our #6 next year. Nice development for the team. Now we just need something like that to emerge up front.

I'd like to add some physicality to the defense with a veteran + some physicality to the forward group with another veteran. I know they got a couple of boys over in the Islanders that could probably fill in. While we're at it. Maybe we could get back Pageau , He can't be any worse than Perron. I don't think we make that many moves because I think we just want to make the playoffs. We're not trying to go deep in the playoffs. However you never know. Once you're there what'll happen but unless you get assets for next to nothing, you have to be careful with the type of moves you make. We have some inspiring contracts and we have some injuries so we can make some moves. But you always got to be careful about that chemistry thing.

Oh I forgot what it's like to actually talk about making moves for the playoffs. Well we always talk about it but at least there's a snowballs chance in hell this time. Usually we were done talking about playoffs by December. That was depressing. Whatever happens, we have taken a step ahead this year. Definitely. I honestly don't care what we do this year but next year we are expected to make the playoffs.

I was already against trading Norris for Pettersson and now I am more convinced it's a bad idea.

He has been totally invisible in the 4 Nations so far. The upside is waning for me.

Loads of talent, lacking heart IMO. Emo, mopey player that oozes bad energy.

We should gamble on Dakota Joshua, if the Canucks are willing to include him in a Norris trade package to offset some of the cap. This is of course assuming Norris to Vancouver is an actual inevitable thing, it's not a suggestion that we trade Norris.

He is having a bad season but also missed the offseason due to testicular cancer. It's reasonable to expect that he is going to need time, but will bounce back. He was a monster for Vancouver last year so I doubt he is available, even with his struggles.

I'm a big Dakota Joshua fan but the reality is he has one good 1/2 season on his resume and that's about it. When Vancouver was playing like one of the best teams of the decade he was great but as they came back down to earth so did he. And during that good stretch Tocchet was getting unbelievable production out of his depth players. I worry that Joshua was a product of a system that found some magic for a good stretch but ultimately was playing above his true potential. He is also injury prone.

That said, he signed for less than I though he would so his cap hit is really manageable. If he settled into a Keegan Kolesar type depth player it woudln't be the worst outcome with the cap going up.

He also had testicular cancer this year I think, so a down year is understandable!

What concerns me about Norris, aside from injuries, is that his underlying numbers for even-strength offence seem really bad. it would be fine if he made 5 mil, but at 8 I'm not so sure.

But of course trading him only makes sense IF we can replace him with another top 6 forward.

Our whole team is not great 5v5 which makes me think that it’s system play rather than any single player not being able to score 5v5.

I suspect that everyone is most concerned with their defensive play first and foremost 5v5, which has lead to a reduction in offence, but also goals and chances against.

Like many in here have mentioned, and coaching staff comments, I think once the system becomes second nature we’ll see the guys get more creative and synergized in the offensive zone.

In the grand scheme of things this group has been playing this system together for a half season so hopefully there is more to come.

That is all to say that I wouldn’t be looking to move guys based on their 5v5 offence right now, nor brining someone in for the same reason, as I suspect a new comers numbers would drop as well.

Still a process, but now we’re competing for the playoffs!

I partially agree but Norris’ numbers are concerning because they’re just so low. He had 1 pt 5v5 in all of January. He plays with some of our best wingers so you also have to ask how much that contributes to our pedestrian numbers.

Part of his bad numbers is him being tasked with extremely difficult comp, but even then Pinto only takes slightly easier comp and has great metrics, with the only issue being low in EV assist production due to his team mates not finishing well. And Pinto has worse QOT as well.

The problem for me is that at his Pittsburgh salary it clearly doesn’t work. That said, if Pittsburgh retains the max, then I don’t think I’d want to pay the assets required to have Karlsson play bottom pair minutes.

I like the current fit of a Sanderson-Zub shutdown pair, while Sanderson is our best option as a Karlsson partner, I don’t want to break that up. I don’t think Chabot can be a good partner for Karlsson, too many miscues. So that leaves Kleven as the option to be his partner. I think that’s too much pressure to put on Kleven to have to carry the defensive load like that. This isn’t 2012 Karlsson. Kleven would have to help a ton. Karlsson would definitely help with a better breakout but in his own zone that’s a ton of responsibility for Kleven. I don’t think it’s the best fit.

If anything, we should upgrade on a defensive RHD over Jensen and play Jensen with Kleven. I think that would be a pretty ideal bottom pair.

Karlsson takes pressure off Kleven not Kleven takes pressure off Karlsson.

I wish we lived in a world where we singed Guentzel instead of Perron, with the money we saved by buying out Norris before it was too late (33%). I also wanted Farabee for pennies on the dollar, but unfortunately those deals now reside in fantasyland.

The focus should be a winger like McCann. We have one in Norris (speedy goal scorer), but Green refuses to play him at wing for whatever reason... probably the same reason he loves Hamonic.

Speaking of Hamonic and Green loving him... I doubt he gets replaced for that exact reason. We also don't really need a long-term fix there with Yakemchuk likely playing next year alongside Zub and Jensen.

McCann would be a great pick up. Not sure what the Kraken would want from us to make it work.

They've got tons of middle 6 forward we could use (Bjorkstrand, Schwartz, Gourde, Burakovsky)

Burakovsky and a pick for Perron. We take on the longer contract with a skillset more fitted for Jimothy.

That's a good trade. Would fit in well with Pinto, Stutzle or flanking Tkachuk as well.

He is, but that also means he has a lot of value to address needs. Trust me if Norris could fetch Peterka or Lambert and a 1st, I'd fly to Ottawa to drive Norris to the airport.

What needs are we even talking about with Lambert and a 2nd rounder lmao. Pinto would ONLY be moved to get a Drai or Aho or something significantly better. Not picks.
