Don't know how we make the cap hit work, especially for Tanev where we'd need double retention+...

But we should be going for some depth LW/LD that fit the group:

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
??? - Norris - Batherson
??? - Pinto - Perron
Greig - Ostapchuk - Amadio

Gregor/Gaudette/Cousins (inj) should be in the stands or on LTIR until the playoffs.

Sanderon - Zub
Chabot - Jensen
Kleven - Matinpalo
??? - Hamonic
??? - JBD

Need some depth on LD in case we need it.

Tanev is 875k with double retention. The Senators would clear that by sending a player whose spot he takes down.

If there is any truth to them wanting to move Norris, I think they want a similar result to want happened with JT Miller, where Vancouver filled 2-3 roster spots.

Unless we have someone going back on LTIR, it will be difficult to add more than one player most likely. Unless they are confident enough in Ullmark's health to trade Forsberg.

I feel like we should not be expecting major moves at this stage.

For one we don’t have many assets to trade, or at least not many that we should trade.

Second we should not be in the market for high value rentals. This team is just hitting its stride. Moves should be calculated and any higher value asset acquired should be part of a long term solution. The offseason is the best time to make those moves.

So to me that leaves guys that are a bit more under the radar that could help our depth and help us push the pace for the remaining stretch.

To me Tanev/Donato type players are exactly what we should be going for at this stage. Guys that know their role, that can play around the lineup and help us roll 4 lines. Tanev hits like a truck and can put a puck in the net in limited minutes, plus he’s reliable defensively, PKs, and is well liked by all accounts in Seattle. He plays with speed and great on the cycle, which is something we lack right now. To me he’d be a perfect fit here.

Also Norris is not getting moved. Let him play out the year and if he plays like he has the last few ganes you need to keep him. He’s the perfect 2C that plays with speed, has a great shot, reliable defensively, plays with an edge and PKs. If ever he gets moved it’ll be in the offseason and unless we get a better player I don’t see it. We need to keep our depth at center. I would not be surprised if Batherson is moved though for someone who’s maybe a bit more well-rounded, again this would be an offseason move.

If I’m Staios I’m 100% targetting guys like Tanev, Donato, Armia and then a solid 3rd pair defensemen.

I think our goal is to win a round or two. Not to take us over the top. Winning a round brings in significant revenue and probably is the difference between signing an Ehlers/Jamie Benn and someone less notable.

has many, many question marks. That means we will need to rely on a very good bottom 6 to help us. Especially since we cannot add top 6 assets due to limited resources.

That 3rd line has promise and shown chemistry. That 4th line looks like it has something as well but limited offensively come playoff time. Adding someone like Tanev/Donato pushes Cousins down to be a menace in 4th line.

That's a bottom 6 I can get behind. Especially if injury happens in top 6 and we can slide in McEwan or something.

Senators shouldn’t be paying for Tanev with any double retention, shouldn’t be wasting what little assets they have.

Only move they can make this year, is see what they can get for one of their 3 third round picks.

The team is bigger, tougher, faster & has more offence while still playing great defensively & reducing goals against.

Which 6 players would you want on your team below Merilainen or Forsberg side?

Merilainen at $1M is much preferred over Forsberg and his $2.75M contract; glad Forsberg is UFA
Ostapchuk at $0.825M acceptable
Cousins at $0.8M (2024-25 salary) is OK to retain if he resigns at $1M
Boeser will cost much more than Gaudette but the new 95.5M Salary Cap might make it possible to sign him
Gaudette at $1M or less might be OK for a 13th F
McCarron or preferably Olivier would be a great add to the bottom 6 to add some muscle; I doubt Olivier signs here.
Matinpalo is preferable to Hamonic and JBD and likely would cost about $1M
I do not want Highmore nor Halliday
Giroux will have to take a salary cut from his $6.5M to $3-$4 M.
Perron at $4M is a waste of money; hope he improves his play but I doubt he will at his age.
I think it would cost us a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick to get rid of Perron.

Have you not liked what Perron had brought since returning to the lineup. He’s been a valuable addition in my view.

Perron will have to play better to be worth his $4M. I hope he does but I have concerns about him at his age.

However, if we make the playoffs this season, I expect to make the playoffs next season and possibly to win a round more than this season which would make the #1 draft pick lower in the 2026 draft. So, I would keep the 2025 pick and give up the 2026 pick. Plus if I were Andlauer I would be a real bitch at the NHL Board about the Bettman punishment for Dorion's lack of due diligence (overkill).

My opinion is that Perron is about the same as Amadio. Neither player hurts us but neither contributes a whole lot either. Perron at least brings some physicality.
Both will probably strike a few more times before the season ends; they'll probably end up with 5 or 6 goals each. I suppose they're fine for the bottom 6 but overpaid, especially Perron.
Hopefully both have bounceback years next season and are much better for us.

We have to understand that Ott plays in one of the most competitive Division in the NHL. They are playing great & yet the standings are still quite tight & there are a few other teams that are right there with them.

Michael Bunting (+1 year)
Noah Cates (would be terrific)

All of those would be very welcomed additions.
 
We can open up more cap by sending down Highmore and Reinhardt and LTIR'ing Cousins. In theory we could open up even more by sending down Matinpalo but i really hope we make the right choice and make Hamonic our 7th dman.

If we send down Highmore, Reinhardt and LTIR Cousins we will have 2.46 million in cap space. I think pro rated we could add a decent piece. May need retention on said piece if we believe one of Cousins/JBD/Gregor will be back this year
