This team is going to miss Zucker's tenacity and grit that he brought. It was expected that re-signing him was out of the question with the acquisition of Smith. Who's going to bring that spark when the team inevitably comes out flat? Not a single player besides him was willing to do that.

Also, the idea that Karlsson wasn't good in San Jose with Burns isn't true.

-2018-2019: +0.67 xGF/60rel, +6.06% xGF%Rel, 45 points in 53 games
-2019-2020: +0.37 xGF/60rel, +2.47% xGF%Rel, 40 points in 56 games
-2021-2022: +0.67 xGF/60Rel, +2.84% xGF%Rel, 35 points in 50 games

He was just really, really goddamn bad in 20202-2021. Outside of that, he was consistently giving strong results. He likely won't repeat what he did in 2022-2023, but he was still a lethal offensive play driver.

That's not really true, it's just a reputation he got because he had 1 horrendous season. Karlsson was really good in San Jose with Burns on the team in all of 18-19, 19-20 and 21-22.
I disagree with you there. Karlsson had one great season in San Jose (last year). He was largely believed to have one of the worst contract in the NHL for a few years.

He is overpaid but he has been good in San Jose

Just not a priority to improve the roster. Please not another older expensive RD who with Letang ties up 15 million for 4 years. Yes they can move Karlsson down the road but it doesn't address adding a quality LD. Nor does it make the best use of the cap space an still have Granlund's contract. Zucker gone and get bigger and younger on LW has to also be a priority. Hextall in his limited time really did some damage. But sullivan will destroy the Pens and when its over, Sid and the core will win zip due to his smartest coach in hockey BS.
