Devils fan coming in peace... what would it take to get Kapanen?

Severson would be in line with what the Leafs would want back.

Both offers are fair IMO.
2020 1st and 2019 2nd is fair depending especially if you're willing to give up the NJD 2019 2nd.
Seversen is an interesting offer and one we'd likely consider. Leafs are likely looking for a more defensive minded guy like Pesce, since we're going to have to replace Hainsey (and possibly Zaitsev's) PK abilities, but Seversen wouldn't be a bad secondary option to Pesce.

My Ideal offseason:
1) Trade Marleau with no cap coming back
2) Trade Kapanen + for Pesce +.
3*) IFFFF Gardiner requires back surgery, sign him to a contract 3 yr x 5 mil contract and put him on LTIR until February/March... At that point, we SHOULD be able to fit him back under the cap, I think.

If Zaitsev continues to play as he did last night, and we have a longer playoff run that some predicted. He may actually accrue positive value in a deal come the off season.
I was really impressed with his play overall last night. He and Muzzin really shut down the top line and took the game to them. Other then a couple of bouncing pucks that were misplayed by Zaitsev he had a really solid game.

The problem with Zaitsev is that once that puck touches his stick, he cant do anything with it. You gotta be able to quickly get the puck up to your forwards.
If he made like 2 million, I'd have no problem with him tbh. But at 4.5, you need him to be able to do that.

Or, he is just the defensive RHD that everyone is begging Leaf management to trade for. I know his cap hit isn't ideal, but we won't find a much better dman for less, and if they are paid less, they cost way more to trade for.
I keep seeing quotes in D trade threads "We just need someone who can play D, we have enough offence.", that is a good description of Nikita Zaitsev.

in terms of adv stats this past year was his worst, he was around 50% CF% and FF% past 4 years so Hainsey level
I think he's a solid top 4 capable of 20+ mins , with a 4.1 cap hit
Zaitsev has looked a lot better since he's moved away from Gardiner as his partner. Zaitsev had no idea how to read what the heck Gardiner was ever gonna do on a play.
Lots of people want to run Zaitsev out of town but it isn't nearly as bad of a contract as people make it out to be.
Leafs fans just always need to run a Dman out of town.
Guys like Cole, Gudbranson, Kulikov as guys with UFA rights got similar money to what Zaitsev makes.

Keep in mind that injuries absolutely killed the Devils this year. By the end of the season, Eric Tangradi was on our 2nd pp unit. We were in our own end 75% of the time.

Talking about Matthews trades shouldn't be so taboo. I think it's worth of discussion. Packages that start with Aho/Pesce (or Hamilton), Jones/PLD, 1st OA/Severson (probably something better than Severson), Parayko/Thomas+ aren't bad value for the Leafs with their current salary cap structure.
