if there was any truth to McDavid being available I'd be all over it. Mathews and Nylander for McDavid and Nurse? not sure on whether it'd be fair talent wise, but the Leafs would definitely win in the heart department. I can't see either Mathews/Nylander ever driving the net like McDavid does on a regular basis. By far the best player in the league today.
As I said, if you can keep JT/Marner/Rielly, everything else is available. And together.
There is only 1 player in the league I would trade Matthews + Nylander for straight up.
And add.

Pesce or Spurgeon make the most sense.
We want someone in that fits our need at the 4/5 million mark. Like when Tampa added McD.

Spurgeon the most affordable (assuming the Wild actually put him on the market).

They’d just need to dump Zaitsev in a side deal, or maybe just Brown depending on who they gave up for him (probably a guy like AJ)

Lol... you keep Matthews over Tavares, Marner and Rielly

with the way Broberg and Hoglander have dropped this draft I sure would love to try and pry one from someone in the 18- 30 range depending how the draft goes.
see some mocks that have had both them in the late 20s recently

I agree but we are short on D as it stands. Many say they would not offer more than Matthews but they do not realise that unless McD says it's T.O. or nothing another team can offer more. For example, Sabres could offer Eich and Rienhart.
Except that I wouldn't do Eichel and Reinhart for Matthews. So how is that offer better?

Debatable but you get my drift ?? How about Eich and Dahlin ??
If you were Buffalo, would you do that? Just the fact they could offer more doesn't mean they will. They still need to ice a contending team around him. That is the point you are missing here. Toronto has that one elite young guy needed to pull this off, and enough depth to make a deal of this magnitude work, and still be a real contender. McDavid would be in the exact same situation as he is currently in if that Buffalo deal is made.

Just giving an example that if all Leafs offer is Matthews another team can offer more. How about Seguin and Hiskonen ? Petterson and Quinn ?? In other words, no way Leafs get McD 1-1 for Matthews.

Always down for adding somebody named Teemu! Likely takes that open LD spot on the Marlies next year.

Aaltonen 2.0? If Borgman is not up on the Leafs, that's not going to leave any room for a vet on that defense. No sure if that is going to be a problem.

Usually trustworthy guy. Dont know too much about Kivihalme but pretty good season from him.

Teemu Kivihalme

All I remember from him is that he was a Nashville pick and apparently was a decent puck mover in his day. This is the second time we are poaching a 6th round Finn from a Western Conference team after they start doing better in Europe.

Sounds a lot like Rosen, and some have even said he has a bit of bite to his game.

Is Aaltonen's contract up after the season. Be nice to have him compete with Freddy for that 4th C spot.

Thanks. I liked him much better than Lindholm. Aaltonen could actually skate and he played with a bit of jam. Think he and Moore would cause havoc on that energy line.
Aaltonen could be interesting.
I'm a fan of Sam Carrick, was in the org before and just had a ppg AHL season. Plays hard and a bit better hands and speed than the Goat.
**wild Card** Patrick Berglund. He had a really weird year, dealing with a myriad of mental health issues. He is 6'3, skates better than the Goat and can actually bury the puck. Solid faceoff. Wonder if he is interested in taking another shot that the NHL? Him between Moore and Petan/Bracco could be hella fun.

I'm just thinking out loud here, we seem to have an abundance of shoot first players and light on play makers. Does it make sense to trade say, kappy for similar producing pass first player to fit with matthews? or maybe you see how bracco looks in the top 6 next year?
