What could we get for Kapanen in a picks/prospects deal?

I dont want to deal him, but its becoming apparent his offensive skillset is kinda limited. I feel like maybe he has a low hockey IQ.

He might be the ideal candidate to trade and save a bit of cap space.

Nothing less than a 1st. Probably another good piece attached.

I just think he does not have any leverage to ask for a big money deal. He plays like a guy who is only going to make like 2.5 mill on his next deal most of the time.

Nylander for Debrusk... would you make the trade? Nylander has a higher ceiling, but DeBrusk plays with that edge which willNY doesn't

I believe Matthews-Nylander need a guy who is heavy on their line. A guy who can play a Hyman type role but maybe with a little more passing skill and less of a defensive specialist. Someone like a Josh Andersen type but a LW. AJ isnt heavy enough to play that role on a line, he is more of a speedy crafty puck carrier. And Kapanen almost has the size to play that kind of role but he shoots right which is awkward for both of our top 6 LWs to shoot right.

I think switching Zaitsev for a legit top 4 RHD who can move the puck and switching AJ on Matthews line with a heavy cycle oriented LWer should be our biggest concerns in the offseason. We have the currency to make such moves. AJ/Kapanen/Bracco/Liljegren are all potential pieces we could afford to move if we need to for a crucial piece.

There are some in Finland who say that likely future Leafs signee Teemu Kivihalme could be in the NHL as soon as next season. I think he gets a year in the AHL first, but at the same time this guy grew up on and mostly played on North American ice, and has two years of pro experience with Karpat now. It's not North American pro experience, but he should be in the mix with Borgman and Rosen next year. Otherwise, I'd expect him to directly step into Rosen's spot on the Marlies next year and look to compete with Rosen, Sandin and Borgman in a year from now.

I hope that if we land a Euro UFA, that it's Kaski, though I don't know the odds of that happening. Of course, nothing wrong with signing a bunch of guys either, except of course for the 50 contract limit.

I haven't heard much about what Kaski might be doing, or whom he might be talking to at this point.

Matthews-Nylander
Willy has zero interest playing the wing anymore. Hes openly expressed his desire to play center for a few years now, then Dubas tries to screw him for Babs decision during contract negotiations.

Marleau has to go this off-season. We can no longer spend $6.25M on him.

Uh....source?

I also don't think Nylander got screwed. Nylander might have screwed us....elite zone entries aside...the production was pretty disappointing.

It sounds like Nick Ritchie would be an excellent fit, and I have a feeling he may be on the move this summer.

Sam Bennet for Kasperi Kapanen could be a good move for both sides.

Problem with Kapanen is he's still so young still. I am much more in favour of trading Kadri, dumping Zaitsev with Brown, and moving Moore, Bracco, and another winger into the lineup and shifting Nylander to center.

I wouldn't be opposed to Nick Ritchie but I think it would depend on the ask.

I think Kapanen is an overpayment to be honest.

Yes it does for sure but I'm also banking on Bennet's potential. The finished product could be a top 6 PF.

He's 22 and his stats haven't really gone up or down appreciably. I think he's a 3rd line winger that is a pain in the ass to play against. Antoine Roussell type, nice player.

Offseason plan I think should look something like this:

Trade 1 (After July 1st because of singing bonus):
To Arizona:
Marleau

To Toronto:
Lane Pederson (C prospect)

Trade 2:
To Ottawa:
Connor Brown (1 more Year, RFA)

To Toronto:
Dylan Demelo (1 more year,UFA) (Nick Jensen type player, Good Hainsey replacement)
SJS 6th Round pick (Doesn't have to be added)

Signings:

Tobias Rieder to league minimum contract (good buy low candidate)
Tim Heed 1-2 years @ 750-950k
Hutchinson 1-2 years @ 750k-1M

Re-sign:
Marner: 5 years @ 11-11.6M (somewhat similar contract to Matthews)
Johnsson 1-2 years @ 2.5-3.25 M
Kapanen 1-2 years @ 2.5-3.25 M

(All of this fits under the cap by the way)

2019-2020 Roster

Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Moore-Kadri-Kapanen
Rieder-Gautheir-Bracco

Rielly-Dermott/Demelo
Muzzin-Zaitsev
Rosen-Demelo/Dermott

Andersen-Hutchinson

Extras: Petan,Heed,Holl/Borgman

What would you do instead? Also keep in mind the cap

DeMelo on a cup contender is probably on a 3rd pairing. No position really improved and you have a random rookie as our #6D that probaby isn't qualified to be in the NHL right away.

Bracco is an elite passer that is going to pass to the Goat that won't convert on anything.

There are a couple jersey fans good with 34th+ McLeod. An Oiler fan offering 38th+Bear+2020 2nd

38th+Bear+2020 2nd is good. Good currency there. Fill in 3rd pairing RD, get the 38th pick and a 2020 2nd is nice.

34th is only marginally better if at all then 38th and McLeod maybe tops out as a 3C. The Oilers package is better IMO.

Plus I would kind of like to see McDavid-Kapanen
