Assuming Gorton can trade Namestnikov and Kreider, the team probably doesn't need to buyout Smith or Shattenkirk?

I think Kreider is gone, but looking at the numbers, it might make sense to buyout Staal. I know he's the one guy we have all been thinking would finish his contract here due to his NMC and years as a Rangers. Shatty could potentially still be traded and Smith can be a 13th forward/7th dman or demoted. Staal's cap hit in year 2 is only an extra 800k.

I dunno, man, the player I saw last year was absolutely cooked. Giving him a roster spot and more than 5% of your cap even for one year seems like a bad move to me.

But it's such a limited term. I don't love it, but f 1 year on a team that is probably mainly still rebuilding? Fine. If it doesn't work perfectly he will probably still be okay in a 3rd line role and PP in front of the net. So he will probably bounce into 15-20g and he's a piece they can move at the deadline.

One thing you can count on. When we sign a huge FA, there will always be a contingent of fans talking about how they are super fit and can play until they're 60.

And there will always be the fans that say you should never pay for any good players. They point out that it hasn't been a successful strategy for the Rangers.

Like all of the other strategies have brought lots of Cups.

The only Cup of anyone's lifetime here came from acquiring older successful players for promising youth.

This time they didn't even give up any youth. They acquired it.

So let's take a look at the Rangers cap situation:

They have $8.7m in cap space right now with the following players to sign:
Trouba
Lemieux
ADA
Buch

Let's keep it simple and say Trouba gets $8.7m (doubtful but for simplicity sake)

That leaves:
Lemieux
ADA
Buch

let's assume Kreider is traded and Namestnikov is traded with no money coming back (picks/prospects)

Lemieux - 2 years @ $1.75m per season
ADA - 2 years @ $2.25m per season
Buch - 6 years @ $4m per season

$8m for those guys

$8.625m out with Kreider and Namestnikov gone

That means a roster of 11F and 8D.

Send Smith down, save ~$1m and use that money to sign a 4th line winger.

I don't think they NEED to buy someone out. It would make things easier.

I still believe Shattenkirk at half cap hit is moveable.

Lemieux--2 years at $1.5--it's fair--I see him becoming a 3rd liner but it ain't a slam dunk and he's just worked himself into being a regular.

DeAngelo--2 years at $2.5--it's also fair--he was scratched numerous times but played very well in the second half. To legitimize himself as a top 4 D he'll need to take on a penalty killing role--that should push him over 20 minutes average too. Barring that step he's in Michael Del Zotto land. I think he's capable but he still needs to show it.

I would not give Buchnevich 6 years. He gets 2 years too at $3.5--maybe even a little less. He also had a good second half last year but his first half was atrocious. Good signs IMO but I'm not entirely convinced and IMO if the right trade came along I would move him. But anyway the next two years should tell us if he's more like Pastrnak or more like Zherdev.

Im all for paying good players. I'm not for paying 28 year old wingers that can barely crack 30 goals when we are in the second year of a rebuild.

Assume we're basically set now right? Perhaps a few guys getting shipped out in the coming days, but for today that's it?

Based on the contracts given out to Kapanen and Johnsson, I think 3.5 should be good for at least 3 years, if not 4.

I think Smith is the buyout candidate if it is done. As long as it's not Shattenkirk though it doesn't make a whole lot of difference IMO

87 points in 79 games on CBJ though. Has improved every year he’s been in the league and doesn’t have the wear and tear on him. He has a good all around game and put up 11 in 10 playoff games.
