To play devils advocate, we heard this about St Louis when the Rangers traded for him. But he was much older when he came here as well.
Well, that would be awesome if he remained as successful into his 30's as MSL did, right? I mean Marty had 52 points for us his final year when he was 38 or 39 and was over a PPG in his early 30's. If they're comparable in this respect, we hit a home run.

Why would they be trading established NHLers for anything other than established/ready to play NHLers?

Kreider has to go this summer. He's not a TDL move. The Rangers signed Panarin, that tells me they plan on being a reasonably competitive team. If they somehow find themselves on the periphery of a playoff spot, can you see them moving Kreider for young players or futures? I think it's way more likely they move him now for at least one part that can help the team this upcoming season.

The other thing that seems more possible now, a possible bubble or playoff push by the young players. If that occurs, I don't believe Gorton wants to be in the position to lose Kreider for nothing by being pressured to keep Kreider for a playoff push

Realistically Kreider will score goals at an even higher pace on a better offensive team and further increase his value during the season, there is definitely an argument to keep him.

I'm still against this move philosophically but I will hold off on final judgment until the Kreider situation irons itself out. If they can flip him for a young, upside center I might be able to talk myself into being OK with this.

The Cup is still won down the middle and on D. Those are still this team's weaknesses. I think the D can be pretty good relatively soon. They need another legit center though, no doubt about it.
Excellent take. This isn't a finished team. I'm concerned about the overflow of wings, lack of center depth. Worst case scenario is we use the recently acquired prospect pool to upgrade. The cap is tight for a few years until the purge in 2 seasons.

I valued the cap flexibility and the prospect pool. They'll have to build through other means. A cup will be welcome no matter how we come by it.
