People keep saying that health is a big detractor for Freddie as if Mrazek hasn't been dealing with major injury issues in each season he was with the Canes.

Also, goalies tend to bounce back when they play for the Canes. Each of Mrazek, McIlhenny, Reimer, and heck, even Forsberg in his short stint, came in as 'hot garbage' only to put up pretty respectable numbers here. I wouldn't bet against Freddie having a similar bounce back year.

The difference is Andersen's health might be a permanent problem that he can't recover from. When Andersen got to the Leafs they ran him into the ground. 66, 66, 60 games started in his full seasons there with significantly more shots faced than any other goalie in the league over that time.

Shots faced from 16-17 to 18-19
1. Andersen - 6221
2. Hellebuyck - 5671
3. Bobrovsky - 5603

While most teams were leaning more towards tandems and extra rest for the starter, the Leafs were going the opposite way.

I've used this comparison before but it might be like a running back in football, teams will feed them a ton of carries for a few years, their bodies get worn down and they never recover their form. Andersen's SV% with the Leafs went from insanely consistent to precipitously falling in his last two years there (.918, .918, .917, .909, .895).

Conversely Mrazek might be unavailable more often for minor injuries but I think he's a better bet to provide an average performance when he's in the net going forward.

The other thing I'll add is that Freddy has some weaknesses you can't cover for. His low-danger save% has been bad for a while now. If your goalie is getting beat on odd man rushes, you can pinch less and build a more mobile D, maybe get a Grabner type for cheap.

What do you do to stop Freddy from facing unscreened point shots? You almost prefer letting him face 2 clean breakaways every night over him facing a handful of long cycles.

The Bruins faced Carolina twice in the playoffs and the Leafs twice. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Andersen was a much tougher goalie to beat in the playoffs. Andersen had some bad Game 7 performances, Mrazek was bad in every game.

To be fair, I would have taken that version of Freddy too.

But he's not that guy anymore and he's been a shadow of himself over the last two years. There's no comparison between that version of Freddy and what he's become after the injuries.

Each year the defensive core has gotten better yet he's heading in the opposite direction.

Andersen by a good margin but then he also lets in really inopportune goals in the playoffs. Mrazek won’t be as good as Andy was in the regular season and may not be any more durable based on what’s happened so far.

Mrazek getting injured in the first game strengthens his case because bith of them are really, really bad now it would seem and them not being available to play is a plus lol

Easily Andersen. He has fallen off for sure but Mrazek has never strung together two good seasons. And is super injury prone.
