Neat for Hughes, honestly. I don't root for the U.S. team, but having one of the best players in the league join the team for the final feels very sports-movie-esque.
This.

Other potential outcomes from the tourney that may benefit us:

Morrissey gets some recognition around the league rather than perpetually flying under the radar. That mostly benefits him rather than the Jets but it is both earned and deserved.

Hellebuyck sheds a bit of the "choker" label in the final.

Connor learns something of the physicality that would be required to generate more minutes for himself for the American team which would benefit the Jets come playoff time. Also hoping he comes back with a chip on his shoulder from the limited minutes.

Continued 'chip on the shoulder' play for the remainder of the season and through the playoffs for Scheifele.
Yeah, Connor needs to learn something from these games. His performance is considerably more worrisome than Hellebuyck's play (since he has already shown in the past that he can perform in a short tourney with the U.S. team). I've liked Connor's play this season, since he has looked much more like when he played with PLD, but we can't have one of the team's best players go missing as soon as the tempo picks up and the space gets limited.

It's hard to say for the Olympics as it will come down to how players are playing for me:

Core guys will will be there if healthy:

Crosby, McDavid, Makar, Mackinnon

After that it gets interesting here are my near locks:

Point
Reinhart
Toews
Morrissey
Theodore
Marner

Vets who will be there if games haven't fallen off a cliff:
Doughty, Marchand

In the mix forwards in no particular order:
Barzal
Scheifele
Stone
Konecny
Hagel
Jarvis
Lafreniere
Bedard
Johnson
Hyman
Suzuki

In the mix dmen
Dobson
Bouchard
Weager
Power
Harley
Montour
Chabot

Goalies in mix
Thompson
Blackwood
Binnington
Hill

To me the roster will be filled out by which players are aging best in the in the mix category.
Binnington shouldn't be anywhere near Team Canada unless you're talking about the Spengler Cup or World Championships when all the good goalies are busy with the playoffs. Just to put it in perspective, Binnington's career SV% is as close to Kraapo Kahkonen's as it is to Kuemper's and Thompson's.

Blackwood's having a good year, but unless your goalie strategy is to simply go with the hot hand (which I wouldn't necessarily oppose) then I don't think he should be on the list. Check back closer to the Olympics.

Kuemper, Thompson, and maybe Adin Hill as 3rd stringer...

I was kidding a bit when I said playing with Scheifele all the time has left Connor unable to play with anyone else, but really, I don't know if there's a winger in the league who's had more consistency over the past couple of years in terms of linemates or role. And his offensive chemistry with Schiefele (in particular) is very high. It may just be a case of him taking longer to adjust.

He's been godawful, though.

Connor is getting no minutes, if he was on the USA top line and top PP and playing 20 minutes a game then i might get worried a little. Getting under 10 minutes and barely any PP i am not worried in the least that he hasn't put up goals or points.

I forgot Kuemper. But yes my strategy is to go with whoever is playing good.

No, godawful is Laine.

Hot hand feels like a pretty solid option, honestly. Miller wasn't a consistently great goalie, but he when he had his Vezina year, he was also inserted as the American starting goalie, and did really well. I think it's generally unwise to think that a historically good/great goalie who's having a bad year will magically bounce back just because it's a short tournament.
No, godawful is Laine.
It seems cruel and unusual to compare an NHL player to Laine.

That is a tough loss. I read on the main board he had checked in to the Hospital in Boston. Combine that with Matthews current upper body injury, both Tkachuk brothers are a bit banged up. Some GM's are going to be just a bit pissed off after this competition.
Yup, and the worst Schief had to deal with is a little aloe vera on his sunburn

Exactly the only bad game was the first one and it could have been nerves but the other 2 games he was good and should have had more ice time.
You are playing best on best ... its not that easy there's no room its all about someone making a mistake or getting a lucky bounce.
What did Matthews do?
It's ok thou ... I have a funny feeling Connor is going to light it when he gets back with the Jets like Scheifele has for not getting picked for Team Canada.
When Canada wins on Thursday lets see how great Guentzel's stats look like.
If Canada was smart they should go after the Tkachuks the whole game ... lets see how injuried there are?

Funny to hear talk about the Canada goalie crisis when 3 of the top 5 save percentages this year are Cdn goalies... and 8 options better than the trio we chose...

Even Binnington's backup has better stats than him - bizarre

At the very least Adin Hill should have been the starter

Some combo of hot hand and decent track record. Team Canada seems to have decided to ignore both...

I wish Murat was their to grill Cooper with his roster decisions. I hate that most reporters have to toe the company line.

You’d think JoMo would share some insight with his teammates on how to score on Helle. Maybe not.
Per an ESPN article on best ever American goalies, the book on scoring on Hellebuyck is essentially "if he sees it, he will save it." I think it was Quick who said that's what they said in the pre-game video meetings about him.

I'm guessing that JoMo doesn't have a whole lot more to add.
