Could be seventh defenceman if he did make it. I wouldn't be shocked if it is Toews as Sanheim is a better player who just doesn't play with Makar, could be Theodore who probably is not a lock. Can't imagine they don't select Morrissey.

Konecny would be a good pick even with how strong Canada is at RW. If he played on a stronger power play the last few years he would have been on more radars heading into this season. He definitely deserves it. I also recall that two or three days ago TSN has a little story about Konecny and Sanheim talking about making this roster, so there were probably rumblings then.

Also now that I think back to the 2016 WJC, maybe Sanheim will be seventh defenceman while Canada overplays Joe Hicketts all the time.

...And Dylan Strome is selected and overplayed while Konecny is relegated to the 4th line despite being one of Canada's best ES players and hardest hitter

I forgot that memory. I look forward to Strome and Marner playing three minute shifts and then talking up how well the team is playing afterward.

He’s a fine player, I just mean Canada used to have the likes of Niedermayer, Pronger and Keith at LD. It seems all of their talent is on RD right now. Not used to it.
That’s fair. As well as Sanheim has played, he sure doesn’t compare to those greats.

If Sanheim was picked, is there a LHD we think was left out? Because unless he’s going to the 7th D one of toews, Theodore, or Morrisey likely made way

Theodore has played some RHD as well, in fact during Vegas's Cup run he played almost exclusively on the right side with McNabb, iirc. Perhaps multiple ways to skin the proverbial cat here.

Crosby - McDavid - Reinhart
Konecny - MacKinnon - Marner
Marchand - Point - Stone
Hagel - Thomas - Wilson

Realistically, this is what I want for the forward group. I wouldn’t have Wilson there but I’m 100% expecting him to make it.

If it was up to me I'd go

Crosby-McDavid-Reinhart
Bedard-MacKinnon-Stone
Verhaege-Point-Barzal
Marchand-Celebrini-Marner
Suzuki extra

Toews-Makar
Morrisey-Sanheim
Theodore-Pietrangelo

Thompson
Monty
Hill

If Barzal is still injured call up Strome

Good. If he has any Olympic team aspirations, he can get his ass to Europe in May for the World Championships.
100% if you are going to big dog the world championship for years as a young player on a shit team I have no problem leaving you off the main team. Maybe a wake up call if he wants actually go to the Olympics.

Yeah Suzuki has been notably shameful when it comes to the world championship. No one should expect him to go every year but as a very marginal player at the best on best level he should have been at that tournament at least twice by now. Good decision by Hockey Canada.

What's the skinny on Sanheim? Seems like a weak selection and someone who wasn't on my radar but sounds like he's a lot better than I realized? In my head he's not much more than a solid 2nd pairing guy. Any Flyers fans hanging around this thread?

Nothing concerning however as even at our best in 2002 (Brewer) and 2014 (Hamhuis) we had guys no better than Sanheim on our roster.

Only exception is 2010 when our D were all straight killers.

Jarvis and Bennett are playing well, but them being on the team automatically means two guys on most of the predicted rosters (and IMO two better players) are not invited. Holding onto my butt a little here as another couple questionable selection announcements (i.e. Tom Wilson) and I am going to start fearing we’ve really veered away from just taking the most talented team.

Parayko AND Sanheim means someone that most of us thought would be selected, will not be. Could be Toews, could be Theodore, could be Bouchard (though not everyone had him on their mock up).

Makar - already on the team
Parayko - on the team
Sanheim - on the team
Morrissey - presumably a very safe bet
Pietrangelo - presumably safe

I guess this means Stone

And Hagel and Reinhart re “Florida.”

Tell me if I’ve missed anybody, but here seems to be the selections so far.

F (12/13): Crosby, McDavid, MacKinnon, Marchand, Point, Stone, Konecny, Hagel, Cirelli, Reinhart, Bennett, Jarvis.

- I think Marner gets the nod, leaving Scheifele, Bedard, etc. out.

D (3/7): Makar, Sanheim, Parayko.

- I think Morrissey, Pietrangelo and Theodore are still locks and the team’s soured on Toews this season, and will prefer to give Dobson the experience, leaving out Bouchard, Hamilton, etc.

G (3/3): Binnington, Hill, Montembault.

- Yikes.

Could see:

Point-McDavid-Reinhart
Marchand-Crosby-MacKinnon
Hagel-Cirelli-Marner
Konecny-Bennett-Stone
Jarvis

Morrissey-Makar
Theodore-Pietrangelo
Sanheim-Parayko
Dobson

Thompson
Monty
Hill

You know, on second look, this team is ludicrously fast and strong defensively. The forward corps is absolutely brimming over with stellar two-way players. I like it.

What is the argument for not taking Thompson? He's out-performing all the goalies that are seemingly selected, and it's not like those guys are superstars merely having a subpar few months.

Wouldn't it be absolutely wild if they left off Marner!

McDavid - Crosby - Reinhart
Marchand - MacKinnon - Konecny
Hagel - Point - Marner
Bennett - Cirelli - Stone/Jarvis

Those are some tough lines to play against.
