it kind of is with his track record tbh.

Playing hardball with a franchise altering 1st O/A on his ELC isn't something to brag about -- that was absurdly idiotic by Lou.

Funny thing is, Lou did cave. Matthews received max perf. bonuses on his ELC. First player to receive performance bonuses by Lou. So sounds like your assumption is a stretch.
Lou didn’t sign the Matthew contract

Because it's different with rookies/young players.

I think he would have let them hold out, I'm sure there are other veteran GM's that would have done the same and not let the inmates run the asylum.

Poison pill offer sheet? What's the difference between the potential offer sheets and the contracts that Dubas gave? Not much. And we all know how rare they are to begin with in the NHL.

Yes, but rookie bonus is different than "get all the money you want and walk into free agency" contract.

A poison pill offer sheet would be a 3 year deal with a QO in the 13+ range. It would be a Tkachuk situation but with maybe 3-4 teams able to take that cap hit limiting your negotiation leverage.

So Matthews and Marner hold out until December, you are running a team 20 mil below the cap otherwise you don't have money to sign them. You now have one top-6 line and a handful of grinders. If you don't sign them by the deadline you have thrown away the season meanwhile the players will get a fat offersheet payday next summer regardless of what you do. Does this sound like someone who has leverage to you?

We know what Lou does in this situation, he signs Barzal to a 3 year deal and puts him in a position to walk to UFA if he wants to. Most likely he ends up trading him for some picks and an younger middle 6 guy. He can't give Barzal his 10+ deal because of a bunch of retirement contracts and he can't replace his expensive middle of the lineup with ELC prospects because he has none.

It will cost the islanders a lot if they have to move one of their cap dumps. Bailey, Pageau, Palms, and Beau are all cap dumps who aren't worth their contracts to one degree or another. I dont envy the position they are in.

As a Canucks fan (who recognizes that JT Miller is a sensational, game-breaking player), I’d offer up quite a bit more to land Dobson.
Kid’s a unicorn. Would be legendary next to Q. Hughes.

Miller (40% retained)
Rathbone
Hoglander
2023 3rd

for

Dobson
2023 2nd

Rathbone is a great younger defensive prospect. He’s just stylistically way too similar to Hughes, but won’t get a sniff of PP time while OEL is here. Hoglander showed a ton of upside in his rookie year, but suffered from the sophomore slump; tremendous hands, and abrasive for a smaller guy. Marchand-lite.
Isles pass, Dobson is still off the table. Thank you for trying though. Rathbone isn’t anywhere near filling the hole it would leave with Dobson and his potential. If he keeps playing the way he did last season, he’s on track for 50+ points easily.

Honestly how realistic is this? We've never seen anything like it.

So you miss the playoffs or exit in the 1st round. How does that change anything compared to what has happened?

Based on Dobsons play he should be 1 of 2 untouchables alongside Barzal within the organization.

His point is they were both signed and have lived up to their contracts and have even outperformed them last season.

Exactly. Somehow he doesn’t have any value based on the HF experts. Must be the Islanders factor. I got laughed at for comparing Quinn Hughes to Dobson apparently when it comes to age and future potential. Vancouver won’t trade him for Nelson and a bunch of fillers but the Islanders should trade Dobson for Miller and the equivalent of Bellows and Aho. Gotta love the logic.

I dont think Dobson has the same offensive ceiling as Hughes but the rest of his game along with his size probably makes him one of the most valuable young d in the game if he reaches his full potential. From the Leafs as an example everyone except Marner and Matthews would be on the table in some combination.

Trading Dobson for anything short of an overpayment would be terrible asset management. He has the potential to be one the best players in his draft class if he keeps trending in that direction.

It's just the Tkachuk 1st contract inflated for the difference in player quality. Tkachuk got a 9mil QO to walk him into UFA coming off 60 points. Kotkaniemi and Weber both took poison pill offer sheets that were structured differently (different financial situation for KK and different CBA for Weber). You think nobody tries it with the top RFA in over a decade who's having a public holdout?

3 years, 7 10 13 or 5 10 15 if you want to get crazy with it. 10 mil cap hit without breaking the top compensation tier.

Pageau is a cap dump in this cap climate. Defensively responsible centers that can't crack 40 points aren't worth anywhere near 5 mill per.
No chance he is a cap dump. You win with players like him, more to it than points but not on these boards.

So the reining Rocket Richard winner who scored 60 GOALS is on a bad contract, but Pageau who struggles to reach 40 POINTS is a great one because he plays in all situations blah blah blah

Leaf haters continue to prove that they are obsessed with Toronto.
Jesus christ. It was a bad contract because it walks him to UFA at a young age. If you dont understand that fine by me. Has nothing to do with being a Hater. After Mcdavid signed for 8 years at 12 million then 11.5 to Matthews for 5 years is trash. You are buying the extra years with the bigger term. If you cant wrap your head around that fine by me.

In a world where pacioretty is given away or Bjorkstrand gets a 4th? Yeah Pageau is awfully close to a cap dump. Maybe you get a 6th or some C level prospect for him

Probably because apparently you can spare him in a trade.
Confirmed Huberdeau is a spare part because he was traded.

The cap environment is prohibitive. Not many teams are wanting to absorb that contract.

If he's not a cap dump, he's nearly one. No reason to expect any better than the Bjorkstrand deal - and likely worse.

I will never understand this strange connection of Dobson to the Canucks. It’s not as if he is even from that area. He’s from the other side of the continent.

At times I’ve seen posts here about how the Canucks missed out on acquiring him before last year. Often followed with comments such as… “Well if they traded Toews…” All the while the completely ignoring the unprecedented and flat cap freeze.

Dobson has never been a trade option. He has always been highly thought of by Lou and the organization. He has always been viewed higher than Toews. As have Pelech and Pulock.

I mean sure anything CAN happen, but I don’t see why Dobson going to the Canucks is discussed anymore than him going to some other team.

Two isolated deals where two teams are pressed against the cap to get cap compliant during a flat cap isnt the standard. But nothing new coming from you here.

Isolated situation. If you think that way every single player in the league is a cap dump unless they are a super star. Clearly Bjorkstrand, C Brown and Pacioretty have more value than they were traded for but it was all circumstantial. Look at what Lehkonen was just traded for at the trade deadline. Timing matters, it doesnt mean every single player in the league is a cap dump.

But ELCs are 3 years and he's played 2 full NHL seasons. Capfriendly says 19-20 counted as an ELC year but he spent the entirety of it in the KHL.

Contract was signed during the covid season after his KHL year ended, since he was old enough that counted as the first year.

Lou is GMing the Isles like he's 78 and is going to retire in a year or two.

Trying to get himself a cup ring, at the expense of saddling the Isles with a bunch of bad contracts after he retires

My guess.
Dobson re-signed
Kadri signed
Romanov re-signed
Beauvillier traded for a Bjorkstrand return. Maybe 2 4th rounders.
