Such a bummer. Feels so shortsighted by our mgt.

A sports blogger posted over the weekend that during his talks with Tampa, they were not thrilled with his request for time away for NBC games. So, it would most likely be NBC work and then a move to Seattle for him.

Do you have a link to this posting? I'd be interested in reading more if possible.

I mean can you blame them? Asking top dollar and then on top of that asking for guaranteed time away so you can pursue a side venture in the same field?

This is what it comes down to.

We've known this was coming for several years. Looks like it's time.

It's nobody's fault, this is how career advancement works. John's next step is to be a national broadcaster, obviously he's not going to continue with the status quo and obviously the Hurricanes aren't going to give him a raise to do less work during these financial circumstances.

I hope for John on a personal/human level gets whatever job he wants.

On selfish level I hope he just goes full time National because I thought that would have happened years ago already. I’m emotionally prepared for that move.

The one result out of all of this that will hurt the most is if he still calls only part-time for NBC and ends up calling for another team (Seattle) part time as well.

Seattle’s the one team I would be kind of OK with. From a professional standpoint John has done the new-market thing before, and the Francis connection makes sense. And, more importantly from a fan standpoint, being the iconic voice of two franchises AND a national broadcaster has Hall of Fame vibes.

Perhaps it has now come to pass.

I honestly hope they give Maniscalco a chance at PBP. He was decent the one time I saw him fill in, and I think we could use some continuity, and Shaya sucks.

And Epstein didn't kill himself.

I guess so :(

But I would give a vote for Mike too. I thought he was pretty good from the highlights I heard. He’s also already tied into the team, knows the history of the Canes, and well acquainted with the current players. Give him a season and see how he does.

It’s still a buzzkill to think that the Canes are finally a good team again, but we won’t get to share this exciting journey with John anymore.

Little bit I heard of Mike, I didn't care for it, but that doesn't mean he couldn't get better with the opportunity. I hadn't really considered him.

If they don't go with Mike, I hope they put it out there and don't just take the easy choice in Shaya. I don't detest him as most seem to, but it seems like you'd get a fair amount of interest, even with strings attached to the salary for now. Of course Shaya has been convenient for a quick fill in, but I'd imagine you can find better.

Look at the upside: he will call our next Stanley Cup.

I always find it interesting that people just assume John is handed the #1 spot after Doc considering Kenny Albert is the guy that does the other conference final from what I remember.

Honestly, if they don't give Forslund that spot, I don't think he leaves in the first place. My guess is that it's built into the contract.

Reckon we'll see. Just seems odd you wouldn't have your heir apparent in the obvious #2 slot of the other conference final.

If Forslund does move on, I really hope they allow Maniscalco to take the reigns. I thought he did an excellent job when he had to fill in during the playoffs last year during the Caps and Isles series (the Faulk "out of the box and into the net" call was all Big Rig), and I think he and Mike Smith are great on the Podcast together.

Plus, I just think of him and Tripp on the call every game and I genuinely think it would be hilarious. Those two would play off each other all the time, and probably be one of the rare few improvements over Forslund in that category.

Oh, I don't know about better, but just as good in a different way. :) And yes, I think the chemistry between Rig and Tripp is one of the big reasons to give it a shot. The play-by-play will suffer to some degree no matter who we choose, but I can live with that so long as the chemistry is still good and it still feels like Hurricanes Hockey.

Good point.

But yeah, Mike and Tripp just shooting the shit every night during games would border on much-watch TV in this region. The PBP might take a hit, but as long as they're not actively screwing it up or actively missing plays, especially because of the radio simulcast, then I think they would be fine. But god, the humor would be top notch.

That's the thing too, it's not JUST about replacing Forslund, it's about finding someone who can mesh as well with Tripp as he did. That was a big part, Tripp's off the wall tangents and rants that John could both build on AND reel back casually...and that he could do both PBP & side-chat seemingly simultaneously. They had great on-air chemistry and balance.

I just want play by play that is palatable.

80% of Shaya's calls were: "He crosses the blue line, he passes, he shoots, he tips it, oh and he gets the rebound but the puck goes wide".

I like to know who is actually doing those things. Gotta paint a picture. It will suck to lose Forslund's da Vinci detail but they gotta find more than a 3rd grade finger painting. From what I remember Maniscalco was better.
