Hello my friends,

I could not find this info anywhere I guess since it was so long ago.

But did Getzlaf and Perry start on the same line their debut year? If so, was there a concern playing two rookies with each other?

12:35 min a game for Getzlaf
11:34 min a game for Perry
They did and I don’t remember any concern because the team was full of veterans and they adjusted fine, Getz before Perry. They played with Fedoruk, and to a lesser extent Penner and Marchant.

He points to his days in Anaheim last season when rookies Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry were happy to have him around.

"Having that tough guy really helps out the young guys on the team," said Fedoruk. "Being in Anaheim, that was a really young team and I played with Getzlaf and Perry and they were really appreciative of the comfort level they feel. Because if they don't feel comfortable, they can't play their game. And I think that's what the tough guys bring."

According to this OC Register, Tough Fedoruk easy choice
(has paywall), Feds also played top line along with Selanne and McD
So he helped both the vets and the rookies for the season

Gawd, do I miss this team

He could skate, which made him unusual for an enforcer, and he had ok hands. He scored 100 points in 550 career games and 23 of his points came in just that one season with Getz and Pears, by far a career high for him.

Getzlaf interviewed in the last Missing Curfew podcast. He said he likes to be part of building a championship team. I haven't listened to this fully yet, just bits and pieces here a there. But interpret that as he's going to pursue a front office gig in the NHL. He also mentioned that "the Ducks stuff wasn't really working the way they wanted" so he joined Parros in DoPS. I wonder what wasn't working out? Don't think there's a huge drama there but maybe Getzy wanted a bigger role than PV was willing to give, just speculating. Not sure if there's something there between them, but I guess I'm not expecting Getzy to join the Ducks org next.
*If* Verbeek was any part of the reason, f*** that guy so hard. Not that we’ll ever know.

To me, there was no doubt PV and Getz didn't/don't get along. There have been a few interviews since Getz left (I'm not going to dig and try and find them), and I recall it not being hard to read between the lines to see Getz wanted to be part of the org, and PV was not really interested in giving him that opportunity. The whole "player development" gig was a bone tossed to him, as I'm sure both guys knew it was more a symbolic position than anything, especially with him moving to/being in Nashville.

As for the Fedoruk comments above, it reminds me how I am still pissed PV didn't keep Deslauriers with all the young guys coming in. Yeah, I know he got a killer deal with Philly, but it's not like we haven't been giving up stupid long-ish term deals and overpaying for people anyway.

To me, that was one of the first things that gave me pause about Verbeek... then the second was PV not getting another enforcer (or even calling someone up from SD) so that obviously contributed to the Terry/Beagle incident.

As far as I remember the Des situation, he wanted to be dealt that deadline. But I'm not sure if PV would've let him go anyway had he not been dealt.

I do remember those rumblings. However, I know he liked Eakins, so I wonder if PV coming in a month earlier had something to do with that.

I agree very much wih this sentiment. And to add to it, Des only got that deal as a free agent. If we had offered him 3 or even 2 years at a small raise prior to his becoming a FA (and I don't mean just the night before he hit UFA) I believe he would have taken it. He always spoke positively about his time and experience here. He liked his teammates and he liked living here. If I'm not mistaken he was also considered a locker room leader, you know, the kind of guys we're real short on now.

Deslauriers was a pending UFA. No GM would have kept him. That was actually one of the first things that gave me hope that Verbeek was going to be a good GM - he wasn't stuck in old school ways thinking that enforcers are actually valuable hockey players.

And yet here we are with Johnston.
