Forget Gretzky...Records that will never be beat

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Everyone always talks about Gretzky's records and they will never be beat(until now) but how about two other records that I can 100% guarantee no one will ever beat?

Tiger Williams 3971 Penalty minutes all-time
Dave Schutz 472 penalty minutes in a single season

Is it safe to say these will never be beat? Is there even a point to talk about it? Perhaps dubious records but these two are a lock to never be beat.
Gretzky's points record
Gretzky's assists record
Gretzky's 50 in 39 record.
Gretzky's 92 goal season record

I know the title says "forget Gretzky", but the fact that Gretzky essentially won the Art Ross Trophy in the 83-84 season in 42 games is insane. I can't see that one ever being beaten, given the parity among players now.

People love to downplay the era Gretzky played in, but this just shows how far above his peers he was, many of whom were hall of famers.

He also had more goals than any other player had assists that year as well. Doubt that will ever be repeated (don't know if that's the only time it's ever happened, but I doubt anybody else has done that).

Seems like it would be pretty tough for Bud Kudelski and Jimmy Carson’s shared record of 86 games played in a season to be broken.

There’s likely to be an 85 this year if Ceci doesn’t get hurt. And there’s been talk of regular season getting longer again. And season-start Euro trips tend to cause big schedule imbalances.

I don’t see that one as unbreakable at all. It feels to me more like an inevitability. Just need a robust player traded from a team that played a lot early (like this year’s Devils) to one that didn’t.

You can never know how the game will change over the years. Guys in the 1920’s and 1930’s probably couldn’t conceive of a Gretzky era or career

Gretzky being so far ahead of his peers is quite incredible when you look at it that way.

The only other athlete at the top level of his sport at the time I can think of off the top of my head is Sir Donald Bradman. His career batting average in test matches is 99.94 (with him rather famously being dismissed for a duck - a score of 0 - in his final innings for Australia, which dropped it below 100). Second-highest career test batting average is 71.64 and nobody else has ever finished above 70.

Orrs defensive scoring record 139 points as a D

Brodeurs shutout record 125

Haseks Vezina haul (6) and career #s save pct .922 GAA 2.20

Lidstroms 7 Norris trophies

Gretzky's 50 in 39 and 92 goal in a season

There's some insane records set since just the 70s that in the modern era are deemed untouchable but going further back as people pointed out, there's others that are so insane to think about that it's just not even considerable based on today's game and player management
Some guy named Orr won eight consecutive Norris trophies with the Boston Bruins . Bill Mosienko once scored three goals in twenty-one seconds for the Chicago Blackhawks . Johnny Bucyk , Ed Westfall and Ted Green combined to score three goals in twenty seconds for the Boston Bruins . Mario Lemieux once scored an even strength goal , a powerplay goal , a shorthanded goal , an empty net goal and a goal on a penalty shot in the same game for the Pittsburgh Penguins . EDIT- forgot to mention that Gordie Howe played in five different decades(40's , 50's , 60's , 70's & 80's) for the Detroit Red Wings and the Hartford Whalers .

Glenn Hall started and completed 502 consecutive regular-season games.
This is the most unbeatable record in all of professional sports, IMO... hockey for sure. Mostly because of how the position has evolved.

Glenn Hall is 93, still alive and kicking today. Obviously an endurable human. Very nice man... I know his son and granddaughter.

Another record I like to quote when these threads pop up is Bill Mosienko's hattrick in 21 seconds.

Edit: I see @habsfan44 just beat me to the punch with the Mosienko hattrick. 👍👍

of All the records here that 6 venzina award seems the most breakable. It's possible Hellybuck has 3 venzina seasons after this one. Extremely unlikely, but, compared to all the rest it is in the realm of possibility.
