They were getting stuffed. They had good success running when they spread the Bills out. Watching both teams it was pretty predictable when the run was coming from both sides. That’s the real issue, and it holds true even more so for the Bills, very predictable stuff out there today.
For the Bills it’s a concern going down the stretch. Dorsey is just a predictable play caller and it’s going to be their death down the stretch, their short pass game is trash. Bills went from top 5 playaction team to bottom third under Dorsey. Jets pass d statistically gave up more pass yards in the middle of the field than to the outside, yet the Bills barely attacked the middle except on the Knox crosser for the TD.
Carter was getting stuffed (5 attempts for only 5 yards, all of which came on one of those attempts). Knight was rolling. 17 carries, 71 yards, 4.2 YPC, and a touchdown. And it's not like a huge chunk of that came on one big run, either. His longest run was just 13 yards.
The receivers are running the room. They whined and complained and demanded trades because they didn't want to be cogs in a team that was winning. Now they are getting their individual stats and targets, but the team is losing. I don't know about other Jets fans, but I know which one I preferred.
Another interesting stat for those worshipping at the altar of Mike White. Here are the defenses he's faced vs. the defenses Wilson faced, along with their FPI league rank:
Wilson:
NEx2: 3
Bills: 6
Denver: 5
GB: 29
MIA: 17
PIT: 16
White:
Bills: 6
Chicago: 32
Vikings: 19 (with one of the worst pass defenses in the league)
With these games left on the schedule:
Lions: 31
Jags: 27
Seattle: 22
Miami: 17
Four of Wilson's seven games were against top six defenses, and he still won half of those games. He only had one game against a lower-ranked D (GB). White put up gaudy stats against literally the worst defense in the league, and then hasn't scored a touchdown in either of his other games. Assuming he finishes out the season, he'll have only faced one elite defense (Buffalo) and one league average defense (Miami). The rest of his schedule has been/will be against the lower third of Ds.
The re-set was necessary, but if they wanted the Jets to go anywhere, Saleh would have regained control of his team (several of whom have been on Twitter complaining about the refs this week, btw), bringing in a new OC or at LEAST bringing Beck back to get Lafleur away from Wilson (though Lafleur's play calling is an even bigger issue IMO). And then brought Wilson back for Buffalo.
If White finishes out the season, the best case scenario in my opinion is a split (I think they squeak one out against the Jags and upset Miami).
