However, no details of what an actual trade would look like.

This may be one reason the Flyers would have been wary:

Given that Rossi had a hot start last season, doubt Minnesota would have traded him straight up in January. Could have got him in the summer of 2023 coming off 19g 0-1 1 in 2022-23.

He wasn't going to make or break the franchise once it was clear he was a LW, not a center.
At best an upgrade over Farabee. Maybe he'll be better than Tippett (28, 29 goals) or Foerster (20 goals and great defense as a rookie).
The difference wasn't going to move the needle very far.

You work with what you have and move on.

Even if Gauthier never pans out, the could have traded him for a much more useful asset than Drysdale. Just poor asset management like always.

They just had to let bumbling Bob Murray get into their ear about Drysdale. If there was ever a GM to not trust about young defensemen evaluation it should have him been him. He traded Theodore to Vegas in the expansion draft then traded Montour to Buffalo.

Hey, a Ducks fan here. Those moves were kind of in desperation when we tried to compete. Murray got those and many other defensive gems in the first place. We were ridiculously rich with homegrown D talent under Murray. I have no idea what your front office thougt or discussed or what thought process they had before or during the trade process but as much issues Murray had with other things, he'd be near the top of the list of people I would want an advice from when it comes to young defencemen

If I remember correctly, the question with Gauither was always whether he'd remain at center or have to play LW. What made him a "safe" pick was his floor was probably a 30 goal LW.

I think one reason the Flyers weren't desperate to sign him after his freshman year was he didn't show a lot at center and without a big jump, was going to play LW in the NHL. He definitely needed the 2nd year in college and would probably have sulked if sent to the AHL.
