He's going to get to play, and also do so with his brother, so why would he do that?
Even if he could play with his brother, he could look at the team and the management and go "f*** this shit I'm out."

Players don't do that. And by signing now, he gets to burn a year off his contract and get a new one sooner.

True but players like this make Nate Thompsons unnecessary. Brassards, MacEwans, Browns also. I'll take Cates. He's 23 years old and has played at all levels of amateur hockey. He shouldn't need much, if any, AHL time.

Players like this sit in the AHL or on waivers while Thompsons, MacEwens, and Yandles play every single game.
He's more likely to replace Frost than someone who deserves to sit.

I just can't get excited about a guy in his draft plus 5 year getting #1 pp time and pk time on a good team getting .65 pts/gm .

He's likely just a 4th liner and potentially a good one (they sure could use those), but it's possible his full offensive potential is hidden by UMD's style. The leading scorer was at 0.69 this year which has to be one of the lowest in the country - especially for a good team. Cates did have a ~PPG season as a sophomore.
Skating likely holds him back from being a top of the lineup player, but I have no doubt, deserved or not, he'll get plenty of run in the NHL. Every coach at every level has trusted him with a sizeable role. And the obvious connection is obvious.
Call up his brother and let them play together, I’m sure it sets some meaningless record like Yandles iron man streak that the Flyers can make too big a deal about

If they could ditch the plugs, like Thompson and Brown and MacEwen, a 4th line with Laczynski and Cates could be really interesting. But Hockey Law states you need plugs.
