There's definitely a place for Raffl in the top 9, but if Raffl-Couturier-Voracek are a line, who's going to score after they cycle it for 10 minutes?

Well, over the last 3 years, Raffl is 2nd on the team in 5v5 goals behind Simmonds. And Couturier is 3rd. And both have missed significant time, 45 and 35 games respectively. Raffl is only 4 goals 5v5 behind Simmonds for 1st on the team in that span, and he has played 37 games less. Probably would be 1st otherwise.

They'd play elite defense, they'd put up elite possession numbers, and they'd score juuuuuust fine.

Voracek isn't playing elite defense. He was the worst on the team in GA/60 at ES. Certainly didn't show much intensity in his defense play.

Raffl has played one full season in the last three, he'll turn 29 in December, not sure if like Read he's better suited to a part-time role where he stays fresh and healthy, because his game is predicated on high energy. That will help both of them this year, with the kind of depth where they can sit for a couple games when dinged up.

Weise has also played one full season in the last 3 and is already 29. Maybe he should be scratched for the first two weeks of this season since that's the only thing that got him going last year.

While your counterargument is valid, it would be more impressive on a team that had decent 5-vs-5 scoring. And I'll need some positive visuals from Raffl to delete the memories of him wasting golden chances that Giroux fed him with regularity.

Look at the drafts of all the major sports...is there really that much of a difference between the 1st and 2nd pick? Any top pick can be a bust, but in reality, in most cases it's a roll of the dice between number 1 and number 2. You are going to get a quality selection whom you hope can lead your franchise for many years to come.

Patrick is going to be just fine.

Edit: A player from the Albany Devils told me Nico looked "invisible" in their preseason game.

Thanks MR28.

So Giroux or Couturier might be playing wing for today's lines:

Giroux/Couturier-Couturier/Giroux-Voracek
Lindbolm-Patrick-Konecny
Weal-Filppula-Weise
Raffl-Lehtera-Read
Leier-Laughton-McDonald

EDIT: Damn Apple beat me.

Also this is going to make people here jump off a bridge, but Sanheim is with the AHL group and Brennan is with the NHL group

LOL. And all that crap for even suggesting it might not be a bad idea to try Giroux on the wing.

It was crap then and it's crap today, because there is a 0.00% chance Giroux plays Wing instead of Center in the 2017-2018 campaign.

Why is it even brought up here? No one can blame the Flyers even if Nico's going to be an elite player. It's not like you had any choice

I don't know. It has no relevance to the Flyers training camp, and we have a Miscellaneous NHL thread.

Today it is seemingly:

Giroux - Couturier - Voracek
Lindblom - Patrick - Konecny
Weal - Filppula - Weise
Raffl - Lehtera - Read
Leier - Laughton - McDonald

Interesting. VERY interesting. I saw quite a few people speculating that Giroux could end up getting moved to the wing but i didn't think they would actually go through with it. If those first 4 lines end up being what starts the season (with one of Weise/Read swapped out for Simmer), it's an undeniable step-up from what we started the season with last year.
