The have been putting together some serious line combinations early this year in camp and made this group split between NHLers and AHLers early which was a bit atypical... now it's all upside down, fun and tryout mode again

Sanheim and Simmonds being listed for group one but not skating isn't encouraging. Hopefully Sanheim at least will take the ice with group two.

First we're jumping to conclusion after preseason games and now we're acting like training camp lines mean anything.

Sanheim is listed in group 2, and TJ Brennan group 1

*I missed that Sanheim was in group 1 at first.

Also this is going to make people here jump off a bridge, but Sanheim is with the AHL group and Brennan is with the NHL group

Realistically, Sanheim has to turn it on and be flawless to have a shot at the team. Manning will be the #7 and Sanheim will be on the top pair with the Phantoms. With 16 dmen left, they're going to do 8 and 8 for split squad. Might as well let Sanheim get some time with guys he'll start the season with and let him get looks with both.

I haven't been able to follow as closely as I've wanted too.... but what about Friedman. He was arguably the top player for us in the rookie game. Did he play in the first preseason game? If so how did he do? I take it he will be playing in the split squad games.

I dunno man, I thought that training camp lines were written in stone.

I mean why would a coach waste his time looking at different line combinations and defensive pairings, because as we know injuries never happen and you don't have to worry about making adjustments and moving players around week to week.

Just go to this board, follow the consensus, and send in your lineup card.

If people keep making us agree with each other I'm going to start getting annoyed. ;)

It was crap then and it's crap today, because there is a 0.00% chance Giroux plays Wing instead of Center in the 2017-2018 campaign.

0% eh? You're digging your own grave.

If they're trying it now, with basically a full NHL lineup (all other projected centers -- Couturier, Patrick, Filppula, and Lehtera are playing, unless I read incorrectly), it means it's something they are considering doing during the season.

The thing is, even the few people who supported the idea in Norm's thread didn't go overboard pushing it. Simply said it might make some sense given Giroux's terrible 5 on 5 struggles at center and the fact his current game seems maybe better suited away from the middle. I said I'd try it if he struggled at center to begin the season.

Per usual, though, you get the extreme reactions, calling the idea "crap" and even still saying there's 0% chance when the (albeit surprising) fact they're already considering it is staring you right in the face.

It is preseason. They are going to look at a lot of things. They have a lot of centers that need ice time and eval. G's future may eventually be on wing. I'd be surprised if it was this early, but even then, not jaw-droppingly surprised.

Honestly i would love to see them try 28-14-93. Giroux can take the faceoffs and Coots can clog the middle ice. Coots and Voracek are our best players along the boards and Giroux is our best player at anticipating play and making something happen when he has space. Early in Coots's career he had a couple shifts with Giroux and I think they scored each time. I always wished they would try it more often when we need a goal.

Now we have the center depth that it could be worth giving a serious look

No kidding. And one thing they're looking at is Giroux at wing. Already.

I'm not saying he's going to spend a ton of time at wing this season; I'm saying it shows they already are batting around the idea sooner than I anticipated. My point is Norm took a lot of undeserved heat in his thread for even broaching the idea, and it's a lot closer to happening than you'd have thought given the majority reaction.

I also think Vorobyev turned some heads in the organization, I thought he might compete for the 4th line center spot, but after seeing his hockey IQ in action, he's got a legitimate shot at a 3rd line spot next year. And with Rubtsov and Frost behind him, trying Giroux at LW in training camp makes sense - doesn't mean they'll make that move this year, but something to think about down the road.

This year: Giroux, Couts, Patrick, Filppula, Laughton, Lehtera
Next year: Giroux, Couts, Patrick, Vorobyev, Laughton, Lehtera
2019-20: Giroux, Couts, Patrick, Vorobyev, Laughton, Rubtsov
2020-21: Giroux, Couts, Patrick, Vorobyev, Laughton, Rubtsov, Frost

I don't think center is going to be a high priority for Hextall for a while.

Wonder if they're going to install the Flyers' system with the Phantoms this year, since half the Phantom's team is being taught the scheme together in training camp. It kinda makes sense to run the same scheme in your farm system.

You're basing this on preseason practices... :shakehead

By this same logic you could make all kinds of stupid assumptions/guesses/predictions about roster and lineup moves that are "a lot closer to happening than you'd have thought" and still won't happen.

At least with the split squad games almost everyone will get a chance to play.
