Confirmed Trade: [FLA/CHI] Seth Jones (26.3% retained; $7M AAV) and 2026 4th round pick for Spencer Knight and 2026 1st round pick

How can anyone proclaim this is a bad deal for Florida in the short term - - meaning this season.

Panthers are a legit contender to come out of the East and there’s no question Seth Jones improves their defense.

Maybe in three or four years, that $7M cap hit becomes a problem for Florida, but for THIS YEAR, it’s a huge upgrade for the Panthers.

I think Seth really carries a lot of risk. As someone who has watched him play almost every game since the trade, he's a guy who relies heavily on physical gifts to get by. His play selection is terrible. You wonder what his GAF meter was (probably in the negative) and a trade to a Stanley Cup powerhouse is going to rejuvenate him for sure. This season it probably goes well. Its the following seasons where I'm not so sure.

Florida went out and got a D man better than anyone on their roster now or last year. The perception of Jones will flip 180 degrees by June.

Hell, besides Hedman (TB) and Slavin (CAR), FLA now has 2 d men better than any other east contender's #1D
Forsling is our best Dman. Pure shutdown. Better learn something before making an outrageous statement like this.

From a Panthers fan:

Spencer Knight is still a young goalie who has shown flashes of being elite. He can be inconsistent and has an ATROCIOUS glove. I can't stress enough how bad it is. He looked good this year. There was an issue getting him signed (demanded to be part of the roster on his ELC) and then was a huge overpay by Zito with his next contract. He missed a year due to OCD (not substance abuse). What I don't get is, Mrazek and Soderblom have no chance, the Hawks are a trainwreck, I'd have focused on the fwd/d more.

I love Forsling, but Jones is better. He's just had a bad reputation from playing on dogshit teams the past half decade
Might be true and he'll definitely be better on a better team but he's been a flawed guy for a while. From Nashville to CBJ and onward. Its not like he just developed new bad habits now. Guys that are complete studs don't get traded 3 times before 30.

If I was Florida, I would rather have kept Montour, Knight, and the 1st. Montour probably takes less to re-sign with Florida as well (just won the cup + no taxes).

However, in a vacuum, pretty solid deal for the Panthers. Their window is now, Seth Jones has a higher ceiling than Montour, and they work magic with d-men.

Soda has been very good this year, even in front of the trainwreck.
Mrazek was good last year, in front of a worse team. He sucks this year though.

Goalies are magic.
