i guess montour really wanted to be closer to family cause losing him and having to pay a first plus knight to replace him kinda sucks for the panthers but at the same time goaltending is so unpredictable and that 1st may never even be an impact player. Time will tell but that Jones contract is still pretty risky even with the rising cap.

One thing about jones is he is definitely not a character guy. When the going gets tough, he folds like a sheet. I do think he can be a good follower though with his skill on a team where you have good leadership. People who give effort no matter the circumstances are those needed to surround jones. When that’s not the case, jones makes your terrible team even worse.

Your team is shit? And has no elite talent lol. Nobody cares about you, what are you even talking about.

They won a cup unlike you the last 30 years lmao. Reinbacher is terrible and won’t even have a career. Right on the cusp lmao.

...yup, 1 Cup in 31 years of existence and you's Da Bomb!!... :biglaugh:

What a trade for the Panthers. I haven't completely given up on Knight so I can see the upside for Chicago, but Seth Jones is a f***ing good player. To get him at 75% off...wow. Great job by Florida here. Jones is a #1 caliber d-man.
Jones isn't remotely close to a #1. This thread is hilarious.

Amazing trade for Chicago.

How many you have in the last 30? lol. Your team is terrible. You have less success than a team that was a dumpster for 20 years lmao

Then he’ll fit right in perfectly

Yeah I think it’s a pretty good bet that he will make Florida better even though he made my worse.

Jones plays a lot of minutes and he doesn’t play with any sort of flow. He plays a very selfish offensive game. Constantly rips shin pads and makes the wrong decision with the puck. I think you keep him off the PP and you just have him play hard defensive minutes.

It's always interesting to see a defenseman go to a significantly different team environment. This is not without risk to Florida. Jones has been on the ice for an awful lot of goals against these past 5 seasons. Time to find out how much of that is due to him.
And that’s what it’s all going to come down to. You can still expect some great games and dominant performances from Top Dmen playing in bad teams. Look at Mo Seider the last few years. Yet we’ve NEVER seen that from Seth for whatever reasons. He’s still been good but never elite, which we all expected.

We all know the physical talent has always been there, and when he’s been protected and sheltered, he’s been at his best. Not when it’s been asked of him though. And that’s that big question that’s obviously going to get answered over the next few years. Personally, like I said, he has all of the tools to make it happen. I would’ve made the trade from Florida’s perspective. Doesn’t mean he might not struggle in Florida when he’s going to be asked to carry the load starting next season. His best games as a Panther might end up being this year.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

All the ridiculous “ra-ra we got a #1 Dman cheap” or the “thank God he’s gone, he’s horrible” posts from either side are clearly coming from the emotional type fans. He has a lot to prove still, but he’s a very talented player, going into a great situation. Usually that ends up being a successful run for a player.

The Panthers' cap situation was such that they could not even re-sign Ryan Lomberg or Kevin Stenlund, who are both on fairly cheap contracts. After signing Reinhart (the correct decision), they had only enough left to sign bodies for league minimum.

They certainly would have preferred to keep Montour.

Buddy, have you seen Jones’ defensive liability 5 on 5? Amongst the worst in the league lol.

That's interesting. I think the Panthers' 5 man defensive play tends to offset this (see: Ekblad, Mikkola), but nonetheless, I am not a fan of Jones. We'll see what happens.

No one knows Knight better than the Panthers and they are cutting bait even though Bob is like 38 years old. My money would be on him being a less valuable part of the trade than the 2026 1st

For what it's worth, I have been very impressed by the way Knight has bounced back from a rough early stretch in the season and I think Chicago will probably be happy with him. I think this was more about the desperate need for defense here than it was a reflection on Knight.

Most teams in the league would take Jones @ $7M per. People are crazy if they think he isn't a good Dman. This is a monster get for FLA. Most teams have a small window of true contention and FLA are right in theirs. They are going all in on the next few season. Considering where their team currently sits, I like this move. They are a real power in the league.
Depends on who your 1RD is. 7M for 5 more years is crazy expensive for an aging/declining 30 year old 2RD, especially if you have better PP options.

7m for at worst, a #3 defenseman is cheap. Outside of a fluke injury his production shouldn’t be falling off a cliff either. It’s late 30’s that must be avoided

He’s a #3/4D now sure, but he’s 30+, declining, and likely to continue to decline. 7M isn’t gonna look pretty in 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030 even with the cap increasing.
