Legit #3? Jones will be leading their team in ice time probably every game moving forward. He will be on 1st PP and probably 1st PK too.

Not sure how you are comparing this to the Lindgren deal though, this is an unprotected 1st (if in 2027) and a still U24 high potential goalie.

Also calling the 1st "basically a 2nd rounder" should also apply to the 2nd that Colorado gave the Rangers no? Is that not "basically a 3rd rounder?"
The rangers will receive their own 2nd round pick, which mostly likely will be closer to the 1st round than the 3rd.

Saying Jones will lead Florida in ice time and play PPQB and PK further proves my point: Chicago didn’t get enough back, especially when retaining 26% for another 5 years.

Florida will be good again next year, so the pick will be towards the end of the first round.

Seth Jones is making 9.5mil AAV, I don't think he'd get that much as a UFA -> he's negative value. Okay, it's 25% retainment, but is 25% worth a 1st round pick? Is Seth Jones worth even 7mil AAV? Hm.

To me, Blackhawks are the clear winners at this point, especially considering the contract length and Jones's age. Knight also probably has some value.

Massive L on the main boards collective opinion on Jones trade value lol.
It could be a W, actually, if this trade turns out to be bad for Panthers.

He’s a #3/4D now sure, but he’s 30+, declining, and likely to continue to decline. 7M isn’t gonna look pretty in 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030 even with the cap increasing.

I highly doubt that, his contract is going to look fantastic as long as he’s a top 4 damn which should last until 2030. The vast majority of players remain close to their peak until late 30’s, there isn’t a dramatic drop off until later

What's Chicago thinking here? 25% retainment and doesnt he have like 5 years left? so 2.375m deadcap for 5 years? if it was 3x prob fit their timeline better. have to imagine this will effect them down the road.
return is kinda meh too for that kinda retainment

$2.5M isn't a lot to retain for five seasons, but having that retention slot locked up presents an opportunity cost to Chicago, in that they won't be able to use it for something else.
I pointed this out on Reddit and I wonder if people got the impression that Chicago made a mistake by doing this. (Reddit at the time I posted was very 'Chicago wins the trade'.) I don't think they made a mistake. I think it's something of a win/win trade. Chicago got a 1st and a potentially very good goalie for a disgruntled player, and Jones should probably live up to a $7M cap hit. I give each team a 'B' for this trade.

One thing about jones is he is definitely not a character guy. When the going gets tough, he folds like a sheet. I do think he can be a good follower though with his skill on a team where you have good leadership. People who give effort no matter the circumstances are those needed to surround jones. When that’s not the case, jones makes your terrible team even worse.
I've come around to the trade but I am a bit worried about that exact point. We need guys to step up in hard pressure situations and Jones doesn't have that reputation, at least not recently. However, Zito did know him from Columbus so should have a good idea about his character and potential fit with the team as he'll now be part of the core for a long time with his NMC. I'm cautiously optimistic as the trade ticks all the right boxes, but still a little concerned.

Huh!?

The vast majority of players retire before their mid 30’s…

You are talking like they can play until their mid 40’s lol

I think 4 years out is the soonest we'd see Chicago in the playoffs.

That roster is extremely bare, and any youngins they have they just started to really collect 2 years ago.

its still a long time with deadcap, assuming they will have kids they gotta sign and Im sure they will make more moves as well, also the return for such a long retainment is kinda meh Spencer Knight and a late 1st.
I feel like there should be more here but oh well.

Yeah its the perfect type of trade for Florida.

I dont rate Kyle Davidson that highly... Really not a fan of what hes doin in Chicago.

...not bad, we got Reinbacher who I'm happy with...are you trying to poke fun at the fact Montreal is in a rebuild??...cuz it's only been 3 years since the Habs were in the Cup Finals and they're right at the cusp this year...Florida was ratshyte for 20 years before y'all finally made any noise... :biglaugh:
Yet only one team has a cup in the last 30 years. Habs got embarrassed and swept by that lightning team and their second and third greatest seasons the last 30 years was coming up short in a series where the only reward was the privilege to lose (in a dominant fashion) to Chicago and LA.

Preface my comments by saying this is a fair trade given all the circumstances.

However, put me in the bucket of "salty Leafs fan" who is frustrated to see the strong get stronger, without having to give up all that much.

Jones is only 30. Honestly, at $9.5m and the cap going where it is, I think there would have been a lot of teams willing to give up something for him at that $9.5m. They wouldn't neccessarily be good teams, but those looking to "take that next step" in their rebuild.

Instead, he has a full NMC and basically forces Chicago to retain on him for 5 years by only being willing to go to a contender.

Overall, if you're a Panthers fan this is a huge win. If you're a Chicago fan it's like "I guess it's ok given the constraints we were under".
