Have $20 mil to re-sign him. They want to keep him.

I'm sure they do but his value is an all time high and he won his cup so I wouldn't be surprised to see him jolt for a team that offers him mega bucks (similar to how Stephenson and Montour left their teams for big money). It's his first and last chance to cash in.

I've had a chance to sleep on this trade, and I continue to like it for both sides. Jones is regressing and the Hawks are 2-3 years away from contending for a playoff spot. With his trade request going public, the time had to be now to move him before it turned into a huge distraction. I'm OK with the return given all of those circumstances, and I really wish Seth well. He's a good guy and has been a great mentor for Vlasic and others on the team.

Neither Reinhart or Marchessault left last summer and took massive home town discounts

It’s more like Bennett stays and Jones is there to replace Ekblad

Sure, he also knows what it’s like to play on a shit team, not be used correctly, and gets to play on a team he loves to be on. Multiple guys have chosen to stay that have experienced both.

Congrats on your Cups 50-100 years ago. Your team is terrible.
Hey their last cup was 92-93 that’s only 32 years ago. The year before the Panthers came into existence. So in that time the Panthers have 3 finals appearances and 1 cup vs the Habs 1 final appearance and no cups. And on top of that

The Florida Panthers have a 58-40-6-11 record versus the Canadiens all-time.

So apples to apples his amazing original 6 team, has a losing record and less cups then a team that was a complete and total dumpster fire for 20 years. Not sure I’d be gloating about that, but being a Dolphins fan I understand why he’d want to cling on to the past.

Great point. Thumbs up.

People are praising Chicago for their return on Jones. But, does this make them a better team in the long-run? If not, how was that a good return? They also paid two high first round picks to get Jones in the first place.

Chicago gets potentially nothing. A late first round pick 1-2 years from now and a goalie that might be decent.

Chicago needs goaltending for sure. (They foolishly passed on Trey Augustine in favor of Adam Gajan btw). But, Knight is a wildcard.

They also need depth on defense. Was Jones worth 9.5? No. But who else was going to get that money on Chicago’s roster? The guy is playing 24 hard minutes a night. Chicago has nobody to replace him.

I’d like to hear one good decision he has made. He’s been brutal.
So the Hawks lose because they paid prospect and 2 picks for Jones, but the 2 assets they got back are potentially worthless? Just an odd take in that Boquist and Jiricek are not in the NHL yet and Boquist has cleared waivers. I do like Sillinger.

At the end of the day, SJ didn’t want to want to rebuild for the prime of his career, and as a Hawks fan I don't blame him. I like the return as the Hawks now have a high potential goalie (which they lacked) and it's never bad to add another future 1st. The Hawks blueline looked great when SJ was out and I'm really excited for the future. I'd much rather have the kids playing and developing.

Seth Jones isn't a bad player, but even with retention he's not worth that cap hit.

That plus what Florida gave up, not sure if the value is there. It's basically an All-in move. He absolutely makes them a better team and cup favorites once again, but I think they heavily overpaid. If they don't repeat, this will look like a massive failure. If it works out, Zito is a genius.

I just feel like giving away your stud future 1G and a 1st for a guy that's like 3-4M overpaid isn't the best way to spend your assets. He's gonna be what, the Panthers 4D ?

Are they better than they were before the trade ? Absolutely

Did they overpay to acquire Seth Jones ? Also, absolutely

Cup or bust

So how many Canadian players have raised that cup compared to American players. Without Canadians the Panthers and all other Americans team would be dumpster fires.

Easy win for Florida. Goalies are voodoo, and they already have Bob. 2026 1st should be a late pick. They get a top 4 RHD with term and 25% retention. Surprised Chicago couldn't get Cowan, 2026 1st and Minten from the Leafs with the retention :sarcasm:
As a hawk fan I’d rather have Knight. Despite Leaf fans praises Cowan as we all recently saw has to many holes in his game to be a good top 6 guy and is weak in his own zone. Minten looks to be a decent future 3rd line C but they are a fine a dozen.
Knight appears ready to be a good starter in this league. Where he ends up ? ? ? Could be a star, could be middling but certainly more upside than the others.

all in on what? Seth Jones is one of the worst Defensemen and top 3 worst contracts in the league.
You should watch a game sometime.

I don’t think they got the amazing return people are saying they did. They paid more for him than they got in return. So, that’s a net loss and they are also retaining 25% of his salary.

You can’t have a team with kids alone. Frankly, I think keeping him would’ve been more beneficial to the d prospects coming up. Who’s going to replace his minutes? Artyom? He’s not going to be at that level for a long time if ever. Korchinski? He was already put into a position he wasn’t ready for and is now in the minors. Rinzel? He’s going to need some development time before he’s able to be an impact player.

They are good prospects. But, they are all going to have to be put into positions they aren’t necessarily ready for and not all of them are going to pan out. It would’ve been great to see Matthew Schaefer play along side a veteran like Jones.

You said the defense looked great without Jones. Who looked great? Who was amplified by Jones’ absence? Wyatt Kaiser? Del Mastro? If your young guys pan out, these guys are not in the lineup anyways.
