You think Seth Jones is a $3M player? lol ok
He's a 3-4M player, you think he's worth over 4M ? He's going to be 31 this year, he's not some young stud D prospect projecting to be a 1D anymore. His best days are behind him, guys don't really get better as they approach 31, it's a decline always.

He's going into a much better situation, but genuine question. What do you think he's worth ? IMO, considering his term (he's signed until he's 35 years old) 3-4M ish is fair for him, he's a 4D.

Guy has been a minus player almost his entire career, I know it's a team stat but it's pretty much almost every single year.

So many people are still attached to his pre-draft hype, scouts had him ranked #1 above Barkov and Mackinnon. He has done absolutely nothing at the NHL level to suggest he's worth that contract. Legitimate 4D. And 4D shouldn't be on a 7M cap hit.

This has so much value, not sure it can be justified with any trade. Five years?!?! That should be worth two firsts at least if not more. Knight is legit though and I guess Chicago really wanted to move Jones.
When a player makes the “proper” amount and the acquiring team seeks retention they pay for it. When the player is overpaid the original team eats the retention cost.
Bowman traded for and signed Jones to his deal.
At 2.5 retained Jones is a good deal. Knight and a 1st (2 drafts from now) is a good return. The Panthers aren’t “paying” for the retention because it is correcting Bowman’s overpayment.

Look who you are debating with? He thinks Rielly is a top pairing D.

I was on record before this season saying that I viewed Spencer Knight as an asset and expected absolutely nothing from him. He had a brutal stretch earlier this season when Bobrovsky missed some time and he was horrible. I said they should look to trade him ASAP.

But,

He's been absolutely lights out since then and has looked much more confident. Honestly, I think he has turned the corner, and I think Chicago will be quite happy with this trade, especially given that Jones wanted to be moved and was apparently becoming a malcontent. I hope the Panthers are also going to be happy with it.

It's true that he's been overpaid but in the end the Panthers are getting a top4 D with a reasonable cap hit, someone has to pay for the mistake in order to get a good player and it's not Florida. It's a good return for Chicago too, potentially great, if Knight can reach his full potential.

So the Hawks lose because they paid prospect and 2 picks for Jones, but the 2 assets they got back are potentially worthless? Just an odd take in that Boquist and Jiricek are not in the NHL yet and Boquist has cleared waivers. I do like Sillinger.

At the end of the day, SJ didn’t want to want to rebuild for the prime of his career, and as a Hawks fan I don't blame him. I like the return as the Hawks now have a high potential goalie (which they lacked) and it's never bad to add another future 1st. The Hawks blueline looked great when SJ was out and I'm really excited for the future. I'd much rather have the kids playing and developing.
The Hawks also received a 1st round pick in the Jones/Columbus trade which they used to draft Nolan Allan who has made huge strides this season.

If you think Jones is a 3-4 mill a year player that puts Rielly’s value at about 2m to 2.5m correct.

Rielly is an offensively “talented” D man who puts up points playing with Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares. Yet can’t run a PP and is a #6 level guy defensively.
Jones (as the 2 threads about him indicate) is paid like a top 5 (in the league) RHD when he’s more in the 15 to 25 range. He is also good defensively … also a middling top pair level.

I bring this up because you recently praised Rielly. I’m not even a big fan of Jones but your evaluations show how out of touch you are with reality.

I agree but some are claiming the Panthers didn’t pay “enough” for retention.
My opinion (I’m a former Chicagoan, lifelong Hawk fan who lives in Cocoa Beach and attends 5-10 panther games a year)
Proper pay for jones? if he was UFA today he would likely get 8m x 5yrs.
It’s on the Hawks to eat the 1.5 getting him down to 8m. They aren’t getting compensated for eating that money as it was their mistake (by previous GM)
Chicago is getting “part of the 1st rd pick for eating the extra 500k and the rest of the 1st along with a promising young netminder for Jones and a 4th.
It’s really a pretty fair deal all around.

I’m intrigued to see what Knight does with Jimmy Waite. If he can get to where he was projected earlier in his career, Chicago has their goalie and a really good D group coming up.

One of the best GM's in the league.. will be hilarious to see what they add with that 8 mill? Good luck to the rest of the East. Please teach my Oilers how to make moves with limited cap space and using LTIR.

To be fair this is a legitimate injury. Florida did not do anything like this last year. They’re not milking the system, it just works out for us.

I highly doubt that, his contract is going to look fantastic as long as he’s a top 4 damn which should last until 2030. The vast majority of players remain close to their peak until late 30’s, there isn’t a dramatic drop off until later
Lol what? No, a vast majority of players do not remain close to their peak until their late 30s. Did I miss the sarcasm? Is this a bit?

Something tells me that if there was no LTIR loophole that Tkachuk would return before the playoffs.

However, I don't consdier it cheating. I had these fights with Vegas fans for 2 straight years. I changed my mind. I think it's genius and hope my Oilers do it with Kane. It's not illegal. It's being done in broad daylight year after year. pretty sure Vegas is doing it again to with Theodore?

And 'no', I'm not saying they are fake injuries. I believe Stone was hurt too. Just not that conveniently hurt that all the guys are 100% healthy on day 1 of the playoffs.lol

They need to change the loophole regardless. I don’t like it even as a Florida fan.
