Honestly I didn't know that Tkachuk was allowed to sign a 8 year deal when traded to Florida.

They changed the rule in the 2020 CBA. Karlsson had to wait until the following off-season to sign for 8 years in 2019.

EDIT: It appears I got this wrong, the change was this: If you are signed to a contract for the upcoming season and want to sign an 8 year extension with your new team in the off-season, now you can do that.

It really seems Calgary re-signed Tkachuk to the 8 year deal as part of this trade.

Anyone who says Calgary won this is out to lunch. Florida got a 24 year old superstar for two pending UFAs and a late first round pick. Still has five years (six? depending on birthdate) of seasons in his 20s.

That said, considering the Flames had limited leverage considering they "had" to trade Tkachuk and other teams knew it, they didn't do half bad. I was expecting the return to be worse.

Also I hope we aren’t ignoring the fact this is probably a 2026 1st and they wont pick in the 1sf until 2027

So Florida essentially got another winger that is 5 years younger. Good deal for them.

Not sure what Calgary is doing unless they know Hub will resign there else he will be leaving in a year.

You can spin this anyway you like...

Calgary got a superstar and a top pairing defender for a disgruntled star.

This just blew my socks off. Wow, massive deal. Can't say how this makes Florida better tbh although Huberdeau needs a new deal soon so maybe the Panthers weren't comfortable with that scenario.

Ottawa needs to target a Calgary D now in a trade. Whether its Weegar, Tanev or Andersson.
