Zito has absolutely run through Florida’s assets in his tenure. I keep calling him an EANHL CPU GM for a reason. He just goes out and gets whoever with little thought put into actual roster building or asset management

This is a crazy NBA-esque trade.

Really interesting trade from Florida here.

Huberdeau had a better season but is 28 and heading into UFA after the season ends. Same with Weager who is 29.

Tkachuk is younger and Florida will have him for the remainder of his athletic prime.

Actually think Calgary got better in the short term but they may have just kicked the can down the road. They gotta go for it next year with Huberdeau and Weager on expiring contracts.

Respect the move from both GMs.

Well congrats Flames fans. For the shi**y summer they were in they won big on that trade if of course they manage to sign Huberdeau.

You can spin this anyway you like...

Calgary got a superstar and a top pairing defender for a disgruntled star.

I don't think Weegar is a legit top pairing guy on a Cup roster and they'll likely end up selling one or both of them at the deadline, but the overall return is still huge.

Calgary keeps the window open for another year. They should push all the chips in now before it’s too late.

Dorion is off the hook now for not being able to acquire Weegar.

Anyone who says Calgary won this is out to lunch. Florida got a 24 year old superstar for two pending UFAs and a late first round pick. Still has five years (six? depending on birthdate) of seasons in his 20s.

That said, considering the Flames had limited leverage considering they "had" to trade Tkachuk and other teams knew it, they didn't do half bad. I was expecting the return to be worse.
Matthew Tkachuk put up superstar numbers this past season. He’s not a superstar player. Never has been. He benefitted big time playing on a line with incredible chemistry and fed off a true superstar in Gaudreau. He’s a solid 1st line player. That’s it.
