After the deadline, Sweeney implied that though he hadn't given Marchand a precise choice of destinations, he complied with at least one of his preferences beyond the M-NTC (and I think it's assumed this was to nix any trades out west). That probably limited his destinations much more significantly.

Contractually yes but a GM can decide to accommodate whatever he feels like if the players asks for a certain spot and has done as much as Marchand has for the franchise. They could have said we can't make a deal give us 3 teams and we will get you a shot at a cup.

We're obviously out of the playoffs and going into a rebuild, as a thanks for everything to Marchand we traded him to a cup contender. There's no reason for him to stay and struggle, and I'm sure he had input on the move. Not that hard to understand. I feel terrible for Pasta though. Dude is a castaway on an island now
