no doubt its been a brutal stretch but its never as good or bad as it looks. like its not even close this team is a much better team overall than where they were at this point last year in terms of controlling play over 60 mins, not getting dominated for stretches almost ever, just general gameplay over 60 mins they are so much better year over year. on the other side bad goals are going in, breakdowns are beating them at a higher %, and just generally you can feel and see the difference in the confidence they had last year.

last years team just hung around no matter how bad things looked and igor kept them in it and they knew when they had their chance they'd bury it. this year its like they generally control play but its like they're afraid to be aggressive about it. when you watch them attack there's no decisiveness, no forcefulness that should be there with the size and strength they have. if you watch the bruins or avs they'll play through you to get to pucks. the rangers are happy to let you tie their sticks up or box out or be forced outside. sometimes you gotta just go drive through teams and force the issue. they're just too happy to try and play this skill game/look to move the puck around and that becomes easy to defend. you need an edge where you physically and mentally push teams around and take ice you want. youre not going to break a team down by outskilling them. you break them physically and run it up with skill

Goaltending is part of the issue. I think everyone agrees to that. There are some games we have lost because of bad goaltending. But it's not the only issue and you make it sound like it is. Our blueline has not been good, our pk has been bad. We are 26th in GF/GP (2.79). Ehm....uou are going to lose most of the hockey games in this league if you score under 3 goals in a game. We get the shots on goal but we don't bury our chances. Some people here are calling it bad luck, but it's not just that.

Totally agree, but I'm confident Igor will turn it around.

I've come to accept the amount of extremism both ways on this forum. It's actually kinda like the team product I see on the ice lol :)

The Rangers are 6th in shots for and 6 in shots against, good for 5th in terms of shot differential in the league. In their best puck possession season 2013-14, they were 2nd in shots for and 15th in shots against, good for 4th in terms of shot differential in the league. But sure they're complete irredeemable garbage.

People just love the word "unsustainable" and whenever a team sucks in analytics always just assume they'll come crashing down. So instead of enjoying the wins they'd wait for the other shoe to drop. Which I guess makes sense but for some reason unsustainable only works in one direction. When they're losing despite analytics far fewer people are saying the losses are unsustainable.
Right. I only read every day last year how unsustainable the winning was and all they did is win. Goaltending matters as I have said 1000 times. This year so far we are basically last years Devils. Good analytics, not so good goaltending, and not winning.

The problem I have is that this league is littered with flash in the pan goalies that had a great season and never did anything after. The only thing keeping me from the ledge was his rookie year and history of great play in the KHL and AHL. To be fair Lundqvist had A LOT of slow starts in his career. His career looked done to start the 2013-14 season.

BTW, the Rangers have the 4th lowest PDO, 2nd lowest shooting %, and 8th lowest save %. These numbers HAVE to improve.

Say what you want about our roster being flawed or whatnot, we're not the 2nd worst offense in the league and unless something shocking happens don't have the 8th worst goalie duo.

They played like absolute ass today at even strength outside of the 2nd. PP looked a lot better because they went for different looks (not just the Zibby one timer), and CK looked a lot better as a result.

But at even strength I still saw way too much of:
-Lousy or nonexistent puck support
-Blueline turnovers / trying to skate through people
-Consistently losing one on one battles
-Related: Losing battles for body position prior to a puck coming to an area that dictate who wins the one on one battle to come
-Poor forechecking on contested pucks - one guy pursues vs. 2 or more defenders, second man in hangs back 3 feet away and doesn't help / "waits for the puck", third forward peels back to the middle of the offensive zone to get ready to backcheck instead of covering weakside half wall when the puck is on the end boards.
-No offensive zone chemistry for any D not named Adam Fox. Miller almost collides with a teammate handling the puck near the blueline once a period. Unexpected passes in skates from a D to a forward a few feet away that handcuff. The idiotic intentionally wide wrist shot from the point hoping for a deflection when no one is even within reach of deflecting the puck. Ill advised cross corner shots and dump ins toward areas where there are no Rangers. The list goes on.
-Sloppy D zone coverage, and an underwhelming performance in net.
-Inability to generate any Grade A scoring chances in the last 2 minutes of a game when trailing by a goal.
-Stupidly deploying players like Ryan Carpenter, Jimmy Vesey, and Sammy Blais for a regular shift with 4 minutes left in a game you are losing by one goal.
-Zibanejad passing up great looks at even strength in favor of low percentage passes.
-Not using Schneider on the 2nd PP unit in favor of Jones. Much easier to shoot off the pass from the point with 2 right D's than with the left point a left handed shot. Also, since Schneider basically sucks at 5 on 5, this might be the one place he can do something...so stick him on the right point, put Trouba at the center point (since everything for the 2nd unit has to work off the RW boards cuz Kakko), and let Trouba be an option to use his shot at least. The lack of any viable shooting threat (who isn't prone to overpassing) on the 2nd unit is why they really haven't scored all year.
-I'm sure there's more.

Not sure how much is systems and how much is effort, but they are painful to watch right now.

Barry Trotz needs to be at least partially on Drury's mind at this point.

This brand of hockey isn't going to win. They look like a bunch of inflatable tube men out there.
I think Sam and Joe sorta insinuated he’ll be back with the islanders next season?

I totally forgot about this game. I woke up at 3 AM, saw that the Isles scored, we were up 3-2, put the game on, watched us play with no heart, lost, went back to bed.

I just feel indifference at this point.

I guess someone is off their meat diet and seems to be sharing with the rest of the team?

Sure Igor hasn't been his usual self but his numbers haven't really been that bad. How about winning games and not counting on the goalie to bale you out every single game? Also the blueline has been a bigger problem than Igor this season.
Now I’m thinking, is it ‘bale’ or ‘bail’? Both would make sense.

Good question. I'm not a native English speaker, so I might have said it wrong lol
I looked on the www and it appears both indeed exist and could apply here but I think the better one is ‘bail out’ as in jail. But I honestly still am not 100% sure.

As the islanders proved last season, just because you made the conference finals the year prior, doesn’t mean playoffs are guaranteed the following year.

This Rangers team doesn’t look like they’re going to finish in a playoff spot at this rate. What a ridiculous notion considering their roster. Really think they have to be considering a coaching change after this loss.
I agree a coaching change may have crept into the “collective” mind of the front office but I don’t think it’s close to happening yet.
I still feel this team is simply slumping.
I wouldn’t make any decisions for at least another month. I think the light goes on soon.

That’s as bad a loss as you’ll get early in a season. They look completely lost.

They’re getting beat by teams that are on the second night of back to backs, and getting out worked in the process. Wtf is going on?
Maybe Gallant has lost the room? This is usually how it looks. Lack of effort and confidence, and then as soon as a new coach is appointed they turn it around.

I'm sorry but Igor is on the long list of inconsistent goalies that can't keep it up season after season. 3 f***ing goals on 8 f***ing shots. Absolute embarrassing performance by him. Lost us this game. And I hope that ref that missed the trip gets hemorrhoids.
Dude shut your worthless ass up.

I'm so tired of you spewing bullshit on this board. The only somewhat ''weak goal'' was Nelson's, and it was a good shot.

How about our team playing defense? You can't expect him to go Hasek every season to bail our team out.
